Unique protein bond enables learning and memory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Two proteins have a unique bond that enables brain receptors essential to learning and memory to not only get and stay where they're needed, but to be hauled off when they aren't, researchers say.

NMDA receptors increase the activity and communication of brain cells and are strategically placed, much like a welcome center, at the receiving end of the communication highway connecting two cells. They also are targets in brain-degenerating conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

In a true cradle-to-grave relationship, researchers have found the scaffolding protein, SAP102, which helps stabilize the receptor on the cell surface, binds with a subunit of the NMDA receptor called GluN2B at two sites, said Dr. Bo-Shiun Chen, neuroscientist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

While one binding site is the norm, these proteins have one that's stronger than the other. When it's time for the normal receptor turnover, the stronger bond releases and the lesser one shuttles the receptor inside the cell for degradation or recycling.

"One binding site is involved in stabilizing the receptor on the cell surface and the other is important in removing the receptor. We think it's a paradigm shift; we've never thought about the same scaffolding protein having two roles," said Chen, corresponding author of the study in the journal Cell Reports.

"We believe by understanding the normal turnover of these receptors, we can learn more about how to prevent the abnormal receptor loss that occurs in debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's." In Parkinson's, the receptors inexplicably move away from where the synapse, or information highway, connects to the neuron, making them less effective. NMDA receptors are supposed to cluster where the synapse hooks into the receiving neuron; in fact, it's part of what anchors the synapse, Chen said.

Interestingly, this pivotal protein, SAP102, a member of the MAGUK family of scaffolding proteins, is the only family member known to directly contribute to maladies: its mutation causes intellectual disability.

While all cells have a system for managing the number of receptors on their surface, in Alzheimer's, this removal process appears accelerated, with increased engulfing of receptors and less neuron-to-neuron communication. The neurotransmitter glutamate helps establish and maintain the synapse and also binds with GluN2B.

GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors stay open to receive information for a long time, enabling the type of vigorous and sustained communication that enables learning and memory. In fact the number of these receptors naturally decreases with age, which may be one reason young people learn easier. When it's time to remove a receptor, phosphorus gets added to GluN2B, changing its function so it no longer binds to the scaffolding protein.

Chen's research was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and conducted in mice and rat neurons in culture. Collaborators include Dr. Roger A. Nicoll, Professor, Departments of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, the University of California, San Francisco, and Dr. Katherine W. Roche, Senior Investigator, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Samsung Galaxy Reverb (Virgin Mobile)

The $249.99 Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a solid midrange Android smartphone?for Virgin Mobile. It isn't terribly exciting, but it's a good deal better than many other phones in the carrier's lineup. It gets you Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), along with good battery life and call quality, as well as a comfortable design with a good-looking display. But it lacks 4G WiMAX support, the single-core 1.4GHz processor is only average, and it costs $50 more than the comparable HTC One V?. Not only that, but if you spend an extra $50, you can get the dual-core, 4G HTC EVO V. The Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a good smartphone?it's just a little overpriced.

Design and Call Quality
With a pretty basic look, the Galaxy Reverb is made entirely of black plastic, with a lightly textured back panel. It feels flimsy compared with the metal HTC One V, but at least at 4.80 by 2.52 by 0.44 inches (HWD) and 4.55 ounces, it's comfortable to hold and relatively light. The most distinctive feature is the phone's angular chin, ? la Samsung Droid Charge, which juts out a little at the bottom. It's not my cup of tea. Still, it's less extreme than the curved mega-chin on the One V.

The 4-inch, 800-by-480-pixel Super AMOLED display looks bright and crisp, though its PenTile pixel layout makes text and images appear fuzzy if you look closely. The 3.7-inch display on the HTC One V has the same resolution, but it isn't PenTile and the screen is smaller, so it looks sharper. The 4.3-inch screen on the HTC EVO V is also sharper and can display glasses-free 3D images and video. Still, the display on the Galaxy Reverb should make most people happy. There are three capacitive function keys right below it, and typing feels fine on the phone's onscreen keyboard.

The Galaxy Reverb is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz) handset with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi that works on the standard 2.4GHz band. Call quality was good in my tests. Voices sounded clear in the earpiece, with just a touch of echo. Calls made with the phone were also clear and easy to understand, with average noise cancellation. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and voice dialing worked over Bluetooth. The speakerphone also sounded fine and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Battery life was good at 8 hours and 42 minutes of talk time.

Data Speeds and Plans
As we discovered in our testing for the?Fastest Mobile Networks, Sprint has the slowest 3G speeds of all the carriers we tested. That means that all 3G-only Sprint, Virgin, and Boost phones, including the Galaxy Reverb, are running at some very slow data speeds. If you live in the coverage area,?4G WiMAX support offers a major boost to the EVO V (Virgin's only 4G phone at the moment), so make sure to take that into account when making your decision.

The best reason to get a phone on Virgin is to tap into the carrier's inexpensive pricing plans. You can get "unlimited" texts and data for just $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. The 1,200 minute plan costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you don't do much talking, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month. There is a downside for heavy data users: After 2.5GB of full-speed data usage per month, your speeds will be throttled significantly until the end of your billing cycle.

For an additional $15 per month, you can use the Galaxy Reverb as a mobile hotspot. This also gets you an additional 1GB of full-speed data added to your plan.

Processor and OS
The Galaxy Reverb is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 MSM8655 processor. It turned in solid benchmarks scores for its single-core category, but with the rise of quad-core processors, chipsets like this are really starting to look long in the tooth, especially for high-end gaming. Still, behind the EVO V, this is Virgin's most powerful phone and you should be able to run most of the 600,000+ apps and games available in the Google Play store without a problem.

Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is the version of the OS on board here. For a contract-free phone, that isn't bad. It brings with it a host of improvements that many of Virgin's other phones, stuck on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), won't see. There's no word about an update to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), and it isn?t something you should count on.

You get five customizable home screens that come preloaded with various apps and widgets. Virgin has added MobileID, which allows you to install different "ID packs" on your phone that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets. There's also some bloatware like a Samsung app store, as well as the overpriced Samsung Media Hub, neither of which can be deleted. Still, you get plenty of standard Android benefits, like a fast Web browser and free voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Galaxy Reverb comes with 1.95GB of free internal storage, along with an empty microSD card slot on the left side of the phone. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine, and the phone is compatible with a large mix of multimedia file formats.

I was able to play all of our music test files, including AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA. Music sounded good through?Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones as well as wired earphones. The phone was also able to play back all video files, except for DivX, at resolutions up to 720p.

The 5-megapixel auto-focus camera is average. Shutter delay is a little long, at an average of 1.2 seconds. With adequate lighting, photos look good, with reasonable levels of color and detail, though they suffer considerably in lower lighting. Recorded 720p video plays back at a smooth 30 frames per second, though details aren't as sharp as I've seen from phones with comparable cameras. There's also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, which you don't get on the HTC One V.

The Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a good midrange Android phone. It just costs more than it should. You can get the HTC One V, which has a nicer display and a better rear camera, for $50 less, though it lacks a front-facing camera for video chat. Or, if you're looking for more power, $50 more gets you the Samsung EVO V 4G, which has a dual-core processor, 4G WiMAX support, and a glasses-free 3D display. Virgin also sells the Apple iPhone 4 and 4S?, which have gorgeous displays and incredible app catalogs, though they're very expensive, and are stuck on 3G speeds.?

iFixit opens up new Mac Mini, has no trouble putting it all back together again

Image

iFixit's been on something of an Apple tear lately -- just a day after ripping into the barely-repairable new 13-inch MacBook Pro (not to mention the new nano and touch), the site has gotten its hands on -- and into -- the new Mac Mini. Unlike like the shiny new notebook, however, the diminutive desktop was apparently a pleasure to open up and put back together again, scoring an eight out of 10 on the repairability front and altogether forgoing the site's use of adorable kittens. The Mini gets good marks for upgradable RAM and drives and a general lack of glue and proprietary screws. Click on through the source link below to see the Intel 2.5 GHz dual-core i5 in all its glory.

(AP) ? Serena Williams extended her dominance over the top-ranked player in the world on Thursday, defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 at the WTA Championships.

Williams improved to 11-1 overall against Azarenka, winning the last nine matches. Williams beat Azarenka in the semifinals of Wimbledon and at the London Olympics.

"Maybe I'm doing the right things at the right time," said Williams, who also beat Azarenka to win the U.S. Open title before taking six weeks off.

Despite the loss, Azarenka can secure the No. 1 position with another victory in the round-robin tournament, which features the top eight players.

Williams, who is projected to finish the year at No. 3, won her third match at the event when Azarenka served a double-fault. Azarenka also lost the first set on a double-fault and finished with nine.

"I had a lot of opportunities and I didn't use them. I couldn't keep up," Azarenka said. "It's one of these days, I am a little said because I broke her a lot and I had a lot of chances."

The Belarusian squandered a 3-0 lead in the second set as Williams won the next four games.

"I just was able to play better than I did in my first couple of rounds," Williams said. "That was what I was going to have to do going up against the No. 1 player in the world."

Li Na beat Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in another Red Group to retain a slim chance of advancing. Sara Errani defeated Samantha Stosur 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 in the White Group.

Stosur replaced defending champion Petra Kvitova, who withdrew because of illness.

Li's first win in two round-robin matches means the Chinese player can still reach the semifinals, depending on other results in her group.

The fifth-ranked Kerber, making her first appearance in the season finale, bowed out after losing all three of her matches. She played more than three hours on Wednesday night in a three-set loss to Azarenka.

The top two players from each group advance to the semifinals.

Williams and Maria Sharapova, who was idle Thursday, have already qualified for the semifinals.

Sharapova, the French Open champion, could still take the No. 1 ranking away from Azarenka.

Williams has dominated the second part of the season, winning Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Olympic gold in London. She's won 46 of her last 48 matches, but because of injuries and missed tournaments, cannot attain the top ranking.

United Nations Day (Wednesday, 10.24.12) ? Inspired : A blog from ...

The idea of a global society isn?t as new as you might think. While the use of the internet has connected people more than ever, the United Nations has been unifying the world since 1945.? Today we celebrate United Nations Day, which is the anniversary of the UN Charter.

The term ?United Nations? was originally coined by U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt?in reference to?our allies in ?World War II.? In an effort to prevent future violence, that prevailing?concept of unity for good over evil was one of the main reasons for the official establishment of the UN.

The UN also actively promotes and defends human rights, education, economic development, health and other areas essential to a peaceful society.?? And at Halloween, you maysee trick-or-treaters asking for donations for UNICEF, the branch of the UN dedicated to children?s issues.

With such a great mission, the day honoring the United Nations is something worth celebrating!? Why not host a dinner featuring some international foods??or invite your friends to bring a dish from their ethnic background.? By encouraging global understanding on UN Day and every day, each one of us can promote the?important goal of a peace-filled world.

Judge Napolitano: Did Government Have a Legal Obligation to Tell ...

10:58 am ET October 24, 2012

judgenap

It may seem like an obvious question ? but the answer may surprise you. This morning, Judge Andrew Napolitano discussed new documents revealed to Fox News showing that the White House knew the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was pre-planned terrorism, even though the administration maintained it wasn?t for a stretch of time after the attack.

Fox Business Network?s Stuart Varney raised the question of whether or not the president or government officials hold any legal obligation to tell the truth. Napolitano?s answer? No.

The government has no obligation legally to tell the truth or reveal it, he told Varney. A moral obligation, however, yes.

?It?s unfortunate for the president, but fortunate for the voters,? Napolitano continued, citing the fact that now, voters get the chance to respond in way of votes as to how they feel about the current administration?s handling of the Libya attack.

Ancestry.com Selling For $1.6 Billion, Will Receive Premium Buyout ...

Ancestry Sale 1 6 billion dollars

Ancestry.com is being sold to European firm Permira for a whopping $1.6 billion. Not bad for a site that bases its entire existence on tracking a person?s family tree.

According to reports Ancestry.com agreed to the 9.7% premium sales price on Monday. Ancestry.com first explored a sale in June, since that time shares have skyrocked by 41% at the genealogy website.

Since going public in 2009 shares at Ancestry.com have more than doubled, attracting attention from various private equity firms.

Ancestry.com is a huge hoarder of data with more than 2 million paying subscribers, 10 billion records and almost 40 million family trees.

Ancestry also owns websites ?MyFamily.com, ProGenealogists, and Rootsweb.com, genealogy software Family Tree Maker and Footnote.com. The latter platform holds billions of image that contain various historical records.

Ancestry.com is a global company that operates websites throughout parts of Europe and in Australia, China and Canada.

There are various family ancestry sites but Ancestory.com has become a mainstream entity, going so far as to partner with NBC for the reality TV show Who Do You Think You Are??which helped celebrities trace their family genealogies.

Ancestry.com is also no stranger to controversy, the site came under fire last year when the social security numbers of recently deceased people were leaked through the company?s Social Security Master File.

How Permira will leverage Ancestry.com to earn back its $1.6 billion buy price is not yet known. With the ability to reach a large unique visitor base it?s likely that much of Ancestry.com will continue with business as usual.

(AP) ? Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said he doesn't even suffer from a headache in an article he published in state-media Monday criticizing those who spread rumors he was on his death bed.

The article is accompanied by photos taken by son Alex Castro that show the 86-year-old revolutionary icon standing outside near some trees wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat, including one in which he is seen reading Friday's copy of the Communist Party newspaper Granma.

"I don't even remember what a headache feels like," Castro claims, adding that he was releasing the photos to show "how dishonest" the rumor mongers have been.

The article was published on the state-run Cubadebate Web site early Monday. It is the latest evidence the former Cuban president is alive and seemingly well after more than a week of intense speculation he was seriously ill.

Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise.

On Sunday, a visiting former Venezuelan vice president released a photo of a meeting he said he had the previous day with Castro, and a hotel manager also present for part of the meeting claimed Castro's health was "magnificent."

In the article Monday, Castro says he has been dealing with disinformation about Cuba since the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961.

He criticized Western media he said are in the pocket of the rich, and singled out Spain's ABC newspaper for publishing comments by a Venezuelan doctor who claimed to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke and had weeks to live.

Castro has been out of the public eye since March, when he received visiting Pope Benedict XVI. He also stopped writing his once constant opinion pieces, called "Reflections," the last of which was published in June.

Former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said he met with Castro for five hours and showed The Associated Press photos of the encounter, quashing persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was on his deathbed or had suffered a massive stroke.

Jaua also confirmed that Castro personally accompanied him to the Hotel Nacional after their encounter Saturday, in which they talked about politics, history, culture and tourism.

"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said Sunday, adding that Castro looked "very well."

In the article Monday, Castro explains that he chose to stop the opinion pieces of his own accord, not because he was too sick to continue them.

"I stopped publishing Reflections because it was really not my role to take up pages in our press which are needed for other work the country requires," he wrote.

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.

Free Legal Question: Real Estate Law | Pennsylvania | My mother ...

my mother rec'd a notice to quit or vacate (not sure which yet). She lives in a trailor she owes and simply rents the lot from the trailor court she lives in. She was trying to tear down the trailor and she was told by the property company she can't continue. How much is she able to do if she has received this notice? Can she tear down her trailor if her intent is to leave the property?

Cambodians line streets to see ex-king's body

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? The body of Cambodia's late King Norodom Sihanouk returned to his homeland Wednesday, welcomed by hundreds of thousands of mourners who packed tree-lined roads in the Southeast Asian nation's capital ahead of the royal funeral.

Sihanouk, 89, died Monday of a heart attack in Beijing, where he had been receiving medical treatment since January.

The former monarch was the last surviving Southeast Asian leader who guided his nation through postwar independence. He served as prime minister and twice as king before abdicating the throne for good in 2004.

A Boeing 747 arranged by the government of China ? a steadfast friend of the late monarch for decades ? brought back the body, which was accompanied by Sihanouk's widow, Queen Mother Monineath.

Also on the plane was Sihanouk's son and successor, King Sihamoni, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who had traveled to Beijing to retrieve the body.

The casket was carried on an elaborate motorized float from the airport to the Royal Palace, where Sihanouk will lie in state for three months. During that time, the public can pay respects before the body is cremated according to Buddhist ritual.

Monks and soldiers rode the float, designed to represent a giant golden phoenix-like bird.

Crowds had gathered since morning along the eight-kilometer (five-mile) route, many wearing white, a color of mourning in Buddhist tradition. Officials estimated the crowd at more than 200,000, while state television broadcaster TVK later said about 500,000 people had turned out.

When the float passed by, wailing grew louder among the onlookers. Many, especially the elderly, bowed low with hands pressed together above their heads in a mark of respect. Some tossed flowers.

Thousands of people, some with tears in their eyes, gathered outside the palace in swelteringly hot weather, many of them kneeling before a huge portrait of the late monarch on the main wall, which was also adorned with lights. They carried flowers, lit candles, burned incense and prayed.

"I needed to come here today to pray and see the body of the king because he dies only one time, not twice," said Khy Sokhan, a 73-year-old woman in a wheelchair outside the palace.

While older people seemed more emotionally affected, younger people also came to grieve.

A young woman who traveled with her family from Kampong Cham province in eastern Cambodia described mixed emotions.

"I am happy because I have a chance to come to Phnom Penh see the coffin of the grandfather-king with own eyes, but I feel so sad to see him passing away," said 20-year-old Kay Savath.

Sihanouk played many roles in the Cambodia he helped navigate through half a century of war and genocide. He was known as a revered independence hero, communist collaborator, eccentric playboy, and a cunning and sometimes ruthless monarch and prime minister.

First crowned king in 1941, he stepped down in 1953 to pursue a political career. He became head of state, and during the Cold War tried to steer his country on a neutralist course.

Eventually, however, his country became enmeshed in the conflict in neighboring Vietnam, leading to his first fall from power and culminating in the murderous rule of the communist Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s, during which about 1.7 million of his countrymen perished.

His legacy became tainted because in an effort to regain his political influence, he made common cause with Khmer Rouge, though the regime never yielded power to him and killed five of his children.

After the Khmer Rouge were ousted and Sihanouk regained the throne in 1993, he rebuilt his reputation as the conscience of his country. But Hun Sen, a tough and canny politician who had defected from the Khmer Rouge, undercut his influence, and a discouraged Sihanouk gave up the throne eight years ago. Sihanouk spent much of the rest of his life in China.

The passage of time and Sihanouk's retreat into quiet retirement in China made the once-dynamic monarch more of a historical figure than a contemporary statesman, but his passing was noted internationally.

Gallery Highlights | 10.18.2012 - Scrapbook Update

Welcome to Gallery Highlights for this week!

This week?s finds include some very special layouts that are sure to inspire you. I was very inspired by both the soft textures and the topics of the layouts I found this week. And it?s almost that time ? I?m going to keep including holiday projects every week. ?Let?s go take a look at them and I hope you like them all as much as I do. Don?t forget ? You can click on the links to visit the layouts in their galleries and view supply lists, leave a comment for the designer, or view the designer?s other work.

Annie and Daisy?by mamabean

Carolynn?s layout inspired me so much. The soft papers she used, the cool color palette and her delicate embellishments all create a wonderful sense of love and family. And look at her layering techniques! This is just a gorgeous layout.

Hello Fall by naomiatkins

Naomi did a beautiful job with this fall-themed layout. The photo is full of bright colors but the overall feel of the layout is soft and gentle. She used muted brown and orange shades of paper and added die-cuts with the same soft colors, as well as adding in some even softer, lighter pieces of kraft paper and embellishments. Beautiful!

This is Me by Patricia

Patricia?s idea to scrap an All About Me about herself, including small square photos with captions underneath to give us a snapshot of who she is right now, is very inspiring. Years down the road, her family is going to absolutely treasure layouts like this. Her design is just as wonderful ? she created two columns of photos and captions and layered them over some soft papers and embellishments. She added her title and then another column of just embellishments on the other side of the page which adds balance and interest ? I love everything about this page.

Negative by tracermajig

The design of Trace?s layout is simply gorgeous and drew me in immediately. Her blending techniques are outstanding and allow the soft papers and textures to really shine. But what really moved me was her photo and journaling. She is not afraid to scrap the difficult parts of her life and she does it so beautifully and eloquently. She?s an inspiration all around and I?m so thrilled that she chose to share this layout.

It?s Christmas by sstringfellow

And oh my gosh, how adorable is this little mouse! I?ve included two of Susan?s cards this week because she has done a tremendous job of showcasing one stamp used two different ways. In this first card, she stamped the adorable skating mouse and colored it with watercolors. She placed the stamp over an?accordion-folded circle and then layered that over some holiday-themed paper and a burlap ribbon.

It?s Christmas by sstringfellow

In Susan?s second card, she used the same?skating mouse stamp but watercolored it very differently and then used crisp, colorful flags and clean white punched cardstock borders at the top of her card. The effect is clean and simple and absolutely adorable. I?m always a fan of finding ways to use supplies in varied ways and these cards are a great example of that.

And there you have them -?our gallery highlights for the week! As I say every week, I really wish we had time and space to feature more of the amazing designs out there. ?Thanks so much to all of the designers who shared their work with us this week. What were your favorite gallery layouts last week? Feel free to link us to them in the comments and let us know what you think and which are your current favorites in the galleries!

Winning at Negotiations | Small Business Can

There are many views and definitions of what negotiating is, for example:

?Negotiating is the process of getting the best terms once the other side starts to act on their interest.? ? On Negotiating by Mark H. McCormack.

?Negotiating is? a means of achieving one?s goals in every relationship regardless of the circumstances.? ? The Art of Negotiating by Gerard I. Nierenberg.

?Negotiation is a field of knowledge and endeavour that focuses on gaining the favour of people from whom we want things.? ? You Can Negotiate Anything by Herb Cohen

?Negotiation is a basic means of getting what you want from others.? ? Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher & William Ury.

Negotiation is a human interaction that requires two or more parties to reach an agreement, if only it were so easy in practice. Negotiations can get heated as we try to win new business, prevent a client from moving to a competitor or try to get a better deal from our supplier.

Negotiation can be seen as a process starting with pre-negotiation preparation, moving into the negotiation itself, reaching agreement and then enforcing that agreement or managing the relationship afterwards. Knowing this process and how to move through it can give you the upper hand in negotiations. Here are a number of tips for your next negotiation:

Preparation:
Identify your objective; what do you want to get from this deal. Be specific and use figures or targets where possible. Write these down and refer back to them during difficult negotiations; this will help you mentally anchor back to what you want.

Be able to walk away:
Have a plan B or a fall back option in case the negotiation collapses. This is called a BATNA (Best Alternative To A Negotiated Agreement). Develop your BATNA before the negotiation; it removes your pressure to sign a deal that may be bad or loss making for you.

Use silence:
Silence can be a great negotiation tactic than can make you counter party nervous or offer them the time to come back with a better offer. Silence can be an indicator of you own self-control and demonstrate that you are thinking, even when you are not, it also allows you time to digest information and come up with a rational & non-reactive response.

Uncover their real needs:
A deal will only be reached if it is mutually beneficial to both sides. It is your job to find out what the other sides needs and give it to them in exchange for what you want. Be careful as your counterparty may say they need one thing but really need another. This is a common occurrence in many human interactions and can be an obstacle to agreement. For example, a buyer may say that they want you to reduce your selling price but what they may really need (known or partly know to them) could be for you to provide extra merchandising or marketing supports to them that will drive volume sales for both you and them.

Expand the pie:
Negotiation can be a bargaining process where price is the only issue but in cases where you have an on-going relationship with a supplier or buyer it is more than that. Find opportunities to build on top of the deal. For example, a seller may concede to a price reduction in exchange for getting a purchase order on a new product they are bringing to market.

To find out more about negotiation and how you can get a better deal, come along to Innovation Dublin?s upcoming presentation ?Winning at Negotiations? on Friday Oct 26th from 12.30pm ? 1.30pm in the Wood Quay Venue Dublin.

Roleplay Partner Wanted

Hey Roleplay People out There in Cyber Land!

So over the past few months I have been trying to get back into the swing of roleplaying. I have been writing back and forth for a few years now, on multiple websites. This as many of you have probably have noticed, is the best site so far I have found! Any who I am looking for a roleplay partner, someone who is willing to write relatively frequently and also have the ability to provide more then just a simple paragraph. I have a few ideas of my own, which I will write down later :) But I am also willing to work out any other ideas and willing to read up on anything to get into a character for a story! I do prefer not to have any anime based roleplays, I am sorry I just have a hard time getting into them! Other then that I am pretty much open to all ideas. I am partial to playing a female character, but have no problem writing in a boys perspective!

Ideas
1. The tried and true story of two kids who grow up together, deal with war and fall in love. Now this could be based in about a hundred different times in history. Civil war, World War 2, Elizabethan Era, Roman era. Basically I love history and a good classic love story. Now twists and turns can be added, i would prefer to play the girl, though for a good writing partner, i can play a boy too! Even better if someone could bring a darker aspect to the role!

2.Gang based story. Now this is up to interpretation. I would like it based in Chicago, in the bootlegging time of America's dirty history. Other then that I am welcome to other ideas to create the plot. A assassination gone wrong? Man on the run? anything. I love this idea, and dont mind bouncing ideas off someone to make it more specific.

3.Pirates! But realistic pirates. In this story I would like to play the girl again. A woman raised by the sea, forced to work to a small ship to help her family make ends meet. Preferably my character would be from England, now someone else could play a revile, a friend or foe. Foreign or domestic, anything :)

4. This idea is pretty rough, but again if someone had the same idea I am sure we can work something out. I want to do something similar to the Hunger Games story line. Different districts? Maybe a capital kid and a district kid?

5. Last but not least, something in the realm of fantasy. Vampires? Witches, anything :)

I love historical based roleplays, so anyone willing to place a story in a different time, I am totally game!

Boy, 2, And Father Found Unresponsive In Backyard Pool ? CBS ...

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ? A 2-year-old and his father drowned in a backyard swimming pool.

It?s a life-changing tragedy for the boy?s mother, who found her husband and son floating in the pool and screamed for help.

The father and son passed away at the hospital.

Family in mourning gathered at the home in the 600 block of Clipper Way in Sacramento?s pocket area in the wake of what police are calling a tragic accident.

They were a picture of happiness and health, Brian and Fahm, a young, married couple with 2-year-old Rafael.

?I just heard a ?help, help,? so that?s why I want to know where the help comes from,? said neighbor Losa Lini.

Family members say Fahm, who is several months pregnant, came home to find her husband and toddler unresponsive in the pool. Nobody knows exactly how it happened.

?She was crying, ?try to help me. How?s my husband? How?s my son,? ? said Lini.

Two women responded to Fahm?s frantic calls for help. She answered the door with tears streaming down her face, and cradling Rafael in one arm.

?The mother was carrying the baby. Baby was not breathing,? said Lini.

When they saw Brian, one of the women jumped into the pool in a desperate attempt to save him. She says he was motionless in the deep end.

?I?m trying to get him out of the pool, and it was too deep. It was too deep,? said neighbor Mela Vakaloloa.

Paramedics performed CPR, and rushed father and son to the UC Davis Medical Center on life support in critical condition.

Tearful family members waited at the house for word.

?We feel so sorry; we don?t know anything about it,? said Feuy Saechao, Brian?s aunt.

Neighbors say this family of three, with one on the way, moved in just weeks ago. Few even know their names, but all feel for the family.

?It?s so sad. She comes in and sees the husband and baby in the pool,? said Lini.

Siblings in foster homes reunited under one roof | FOX13Now.com ...

Posted on: 4:41 pm, October 11, 2012, by Aaron Vaughn, updated on: 11:56pm, October 11, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY ? A family in Riverton is about to grow twice their size in a single day.

The family of four has adopted another five children. Those children are all from the same family, but have been split up for months in the foster care system.

Benjamin and Adrienne Donner could not stand the thought of the siblings growing up apart. The children are between the ages of six and 12.

The Donners say a lot of people are looking to adopt babies, but they wanted to give a home to a growing family that would otherwise be torn apart.

?We think they are amazing. But at the same time, how many options are there out there to be adopted at the same time? Would they have had to be split up and have gone to different homes?? asks father Benjamin. ?Just that kind of thought doesn?t sit well.?

The children arrived in Salt Lake City from Oregon Thursday night. All were wearing t-shirts with the words ?Team Donner? printed on them.

?They all just came running out, literally [yelling] mom and dad,? said Benjamin.

Once thinking their house may have been too big for four people, now believe the home is a good fit.

?We?ve been blessed with a big house that we kept feeling like ?this is too big for the four of us, maybe we should downsize, or whatever,?? said Adrienne. ?Instead the Lord blessed us for the ability to fill it up.?
