Motorola feels Droid Bionic owners' pain, promises to fix things

Motorola feels Droid Bionic owners' pain, promises to fix things

With a star-crossed history that includes a lengthy delay, mysterious sounds and other issues, Motorola's Droid Bionic has had a bit of a checkered past. Motorola, however, is apparently aware of Droid Bionic owners' woes and is working on a plan to make things right. At least that's what Punit Soni, VP of Product at Motorola Mobility, is promising owners of the device on his Google+ page. Faced with complaints ranging from the Bionic's locked bootloader to its delayed ICS update, a contrite Soni admitted that Droid Bionic owners got a "raw deal" and promised their feedback "will not fall on deaf ears." He then said that the company has a plan for the device and that he is "currently solidifying things to ensure we can publish it, commit and follow up." Soni did not provide specifics on what those plans are though you have to admit that the guy's candor about the Bionic's issues is refreshing. In the meantime, the phone's ICS upgrade is now slated to roll out in Q4. Bionic owners who want to add their proverbial two cents to the conversation can hit up the source link below.

Borderlands 2

Gearbox Entertainment and 2K Games take you back to Pandora with Borderlands 2, the sequel to the hit apocalyptic RPG-shooter that isn't Fallout. It's five years later, Pandora has changed, and there are more Vaults to hunt. We've already gone through the colorful characters and looked at the first few hours of the game, and now we look at the game as a whole, and whether it's worth your money. This $59.99 game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or PC is bigger and better than the first game, and it fixes a handful of small issues the original had. It's a fun adventure that will last dozens of hours of collecting treasure, and it's our new Editors' Choice.?

I could tell Borderlands 2 was both treading down the well-worn path of the first game and carving out its own new road from the opening movie. Like the first Borderlands, the game opens with a narration from bus-driving arms merchant Marcus, followed by a short movie set to a song that frames the game. Marcus explains that it's been five years since the original Vault Hunters from the first game discovered the mysterious alien Vault. Since then, the Hyperion Corporation has assumed most of the control of the game world, taking whatever vault technology it could and making its leader, Handsome Jack, the most powerful man on Pandora. It's also made him the most violent and sociopathic denizen, and on a world where almost everyone is killing and looting each other, that says something. Handsome Jack is the bad guy.

If you played the original Borderlands, you understand this game. You play a Vault Hunter, a treasure hunter looking for an alien vault on the barely colonized planet of Pandora. While doing so, you cut a swath of death through thousands of Mad Max-style raiders, mutant animals, and robots. All through your adventure, you level up in a role-playing game-like system and collect hundreds of different guns, each with its own unique stats and attributes (and sell most of them, because you only have so much space in your inventory).

That said, you don't need to have played Borderlands to play this game. You'll appreciate a few callbacks and characters from the first game, including the fates of the original Vault Hunters, but the tutorial is simple and Marcus' story tells you everything you need to know to understand what has happened to that point.

The song in the opening movie is The Heavy's "Short Change Hero," and like Cage the Elephant's "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked," it perfectly sums up the feel of the game: stylish and tense in a world that's just as violent and more corrupt than ever. The contrast of the former's lyric of "Ain't no place for no hero" is a fantastic callback to the refrain of "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked," too. To say the least, the opening video will get you excited for the game, and you might find yourself watching it more than once.

The game itself doesn't disappoint, despite starting slow (again, like the original Borderlands). It takes some time to get from waking up face-down in the snow to kicking up your heels for a few minutes at Sanctuary, the first city in the game, but even the tutorial level and the first few missions are stylish, with a few impressive set pieces. The first major?Borderlands 2?story mission had me fighting a midget in a jetpack while his brother fired a battleship cannon at me. And that was a mini-boss. The boss of that mission was a Viking pirate raider with a flame thrower who I fought on the deck of an oil tanker perched on a plateau while flames periodically blasted out of the vents.

Characters Got Skills
You can choose from four different characters just like the first Borderlands, but this time they're all new characters loosely based on the originals. Axton is Roland's replacement, and the most like his predecessor; both are Commandoes who use deployable turrets. Maya is Lilith's replacement, and while she's also a Siren her power is locking enemies in an energy bubble instead of localized teleportation. Salvadore is a Gunzerker and the follow-up to Brick, the Tank. He can go into a rage and wield two guns at once while regenerating health and ammo. Zero is an Assassin and the closest character to Mordecai, the Hunter. He doesn't have a bird like Mordecai, but he can deploy a hologram decoy of himself and become invisible for a few seconds.

Each Vault Hunter has three different skill trees to improve their strengths and class skills. I played Salvadore, and focused on skills that enhanced his ammunition counts, putting points in each level into skills like Inconceivable, which gave me a chance to not consume bullets when I shoot; Filled to the Brim, which increased my ammo capacity and magazine size, and 5 Shots or 6, which gave me a chance to add bullets to my magazines when I killed an enemy instead of subtract them. These were all in the Rampage skill tree for the Gunzerker, which focused on enhancing the Gunzerking skill. The Gunlust skill tree gave me bonuses for swapping weapons often and increasing my overall damage, and the Brawn skill tree made me a much more capable tank, with bonuses to my health and ability to regenerate. The other three characters each have three skill trees to complement their own specialties while giving them flexibility to play the way they want. If you're not happy with your skill point distribution as you level up, you can reset your skill points and rebuild your skill trees by paying a nominal fee certain vending machines.

Besides skills, you can customize your Vault Hunter's looks with different head and body skins. You start with a handful of different heads and palette swap color sets for your body, and as you play you can unlock new heads and bodies, including rare, detailed skils. I took advantage of the new character customization options to give Salvador a new color scheme and a new head, replacing his mohawk and dwarf beard with a clean chin and a hat. I then used a bright purple skin I found that bore the name of a gun manufacturer on it. My bowler changed color to match the skin.

Libya offers further apology for U.S. envoy's death

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya apologized on Thursday to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns for an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans died.

Burns held talks in Tripoli with Libyan leaders including new Prime Minister Mustafa Abu Shagour and Mohammed Magarief, head of the national congress. He later attended a memorial ceremony for Stevens and his colleagues.

Foreign Minister Ashour Bin Khayyal apologized to Burns for the violence on Tripoli's behalf, praising Stevens as a "friend of Libya", a foreign ministry official said after their meeting.

The four Americans died when gunmen attacked the consulate and a safe house in the eastern city of Benghazi. The attackers were among a crowd protesting against a video made in California that mocks Islam and the Prophet Mohammad.

"We do agree, Libyans and Americans that it is absolutely essential and urgent to bring those responsible for this horrible tragedy to justice just as quickly as possible and we're determined to work together to ensure that that happens," Burns told reporters.

"This is a shared loss, a terrible tragedy," he added. "But it is also a reminder of the importance of renewing the determination of the U.S. to do what Chris Stevens tried so hard to do. And that is to help Libyans realize the premise of the revolution, not allow it to be hijacked by extremists."

Burns later paid tribute to Stevens as "a wonderful ambassador (who) believed in Libya".

VALUES

After meeting Burns, outgoing Prime Minister Abdurrahim El-Keib said the killing of Stevens was "definitely not representative of the moral values that we have here in Libya".

He also said the video was "distasteful" and "does not reflect the feeling of the American people".

At the early evening memorial for Stevens and his colleagues, Keib said the attackers were "a group of outlaws (who) must be brought to justice".

In Washington, a State Department spokeswoman said Burns urged Libyan officials to "build the kind of security institutions that are going to ensure the safety of the Libyan people, diplomats serving there, and foster a democratic environment, economic progress that protects the freedoms and the rights of all Libyans.

"We will not allow our partnership with Libya to be weakened by extremists," she said.

Matthew Olsen, director of the U.S. government's National Counterterrorism Center, called the Benghazi assault a terrorist attack and said officials were looking at whether those involved had links to al Qaeda, particularly its North African affiliate, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

The Libyan foreign ministry official said Burns and Bin Khayyal had discussed U.S. involvement in the investigation, as well as broader security and economic cooperation.

Magarief, who apologized last week "to the United States, the people and the whole world" for the Benghazi attack, agreed in a telephone call with U.S. President Barack Obama that their countries would work together to investigate it.

"These events strengthen the determination of the authorities to arrest and bring to justice those responsible and reinforce the security of diplomatic missions," Magarief said at the memorial ceremony.

Libya sacked its security chiefs for Benghazi after the attack. Another official, tasked with employing militia fighters in the police in the east of the country, said he had resigned because recruits were not being paid or supplied adequately.

Libya's interim government has struggled to impose its authority on a myriad armed groups that have refused to lay down their weapons since last year's overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. The fighters often take the law into their own hands.

Plastic pollution in the oceans in birds - About Pets

Although the messages transmitted by a whale fail to human ears, there is a good chance that at least one song of a young humpback whale is dedicated to a man named Peter Brown.

Plastic pollution in the oceans in birdsEnjoying a nice day of sailing off the coast of Brisbane, Australia, the Queensland native Peter Brown, saw a young humpback whale that became entangled in a shark net, so this alerted authorities. As the minutes passed by, however, it became apparent that the animal was on the verge of death, and trying to fight to keep its blowhole above water. Thus, in a heroic style or classic, the brave 67-year took matters into his own hands, helping to free the whale with nothing more than a little guts and a kitchen knife.

This demonstrates that there is still a lot of people who love animals.

According to Brown, ?this whale was not able to keep his hole to breathe out of water, I had to do something immediately and could not wait for the cavalry.?

At first, Brown paddled up whale 25 feet long and tried to cut the net from there. When this proved insufficient to free the animal, the intrepid savior of whales, goggles and tied flippers, took the knife to finish the job.

Brown told reporters ?it was an eerie feeling to touch the flesh of a large 40-foot whale ? but I felt completely safe with the whale.? ?Over time it seemed that was swimming away from all the ropes and buoys tangled with him.? ?And very slowly and went away stunned.?

While authorities say it is an act that should not be done ever, admitted that this act of bravery earned a good result for the whale.

PFT: Rex Ryan says media won't drive Tebow time

Ndamukong SuhAP

Whether or not Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is dating some person named Lolo Jones is of no interest to me whatsoever.

In fact, if mentioning her name wasn?t helpful to the set-up of a good shots-fired moment, I probably wouldn?t have mentioned her at all.

At the end of an interview Wednesday, Suh was asked about the Jones rumors (which apparently exist), and turned his attention to the 49ers offensive line.

?Ha ha, that?s funny. Real funny. Just like Joe Staley?s comments,? Suh said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

The left tackle said the Lions defensive line was cheap and overrated, after his team?s 27-19 win Sunday night.

?I find it very interesting and laughable sometimes, but it?s not my concern,? Suh said when told of Staley?s comments. ?I don?t go against him. The times that, I guess, I have, I?ve never had an issue with him. If he has an issue with me, he knows where to find me.?

As for the Lions line being overrated, Suh replied: ?People are going to say what they want to say. Especially, I mean, you get a win, feel like you can talk. Great for you. That doesn?t really mean [expletive] to me.?

Suh has 2.5 sacks in two games, but called it a ?very average start.?

?To me, if anything, I?m at where I?m supposed to be, or below,? Suh said. ?There?s still things [I can do better]. A lot of mistakes. Things that I can see on the film that I?ve got to be able to adjust and make more plays. I?ve been put in some positions to where I can make plays. I can think back to the first game, I can think back to last game. So there?s still a lot of growth left.?

And if nothing else, there?s always Lolo Jones. Whoever she is.

Actress sues for being fooled into anti-Muslim movie

Nightly News

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia has sued a California man believed to have produced a video ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. She says she was misled into believing the movie was about ancient Egyptians.

?

By NBC News and Reuters

An actress who appeared briefly in a movie that parodied the Prophet Muhammad and that triggered protests across the Islamic world sued a California man believed to have produced the video, saying she was misled to believe the video was a desert adventure movie about ancient Egyptians.

Actress Cindy Lee Garcia also named Google and YouTube (owned by Google) as defendants, citing invasion of privacy and other allegations. The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court also requested that the video, titled the ?Innocence of Muslims,? be removed from the Internet.

Garcia said the video has caused her great distress, the Los Angeles Times reported, and that she has received ?credible death threats? and has been banned from caring for her grandchildren. She said in the filing that she was also fired from her job.

Actors and the assistant director of the film "Innocence of Muslims" told NBC News that the original spoken lines in the screenplay were dubbed over without their knowledge. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

?This is not a First Amendment issue,? Garcia?s attorney, M. Cris Armenta said, according to the LA Times. ?This is an invasion of privacy issue.?

The movie was shown at a theater in Los Angeles three months ago with fewer than 10 people in attendance, the LA Times reported. The movie, a seemingly low-budget and cartoonish production, depicts Muhammad as moronic, childish and obsessed with sex. In one scene, the actor playing the role of the prophet places his head between the legs of Garcia?s character.

It wasn?t until a week ago that clips began circulating online and were broadcast on Egyptian media, sparking protests against the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the U.S. Consulate in Libya. The attacks on the consulate resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Related: US Ambassador Chris Stevens was ?courageous and exemplary,? Obama says

Protests have spread to Tunisia and Australia, ranging from peaceful to violent. Seventeen people have been killed to date.

Since the protests began, a French satirical magazine produced cartoons that lampooned the prophet, triggering more outrage. In response, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, based in Saudi Arabia, has called for insults against religions to be made an international offense. The organization says that "growing intolerance towards Muslims" had to be checked and called for "an international code of conduct for media and social media to disallow the dissemination of inciteful material."

Government officials asked the magazine, which specializes in satire, not to print the drawings which portray Muslim prophet Mohammed as a naked man. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Related: Christian activist says he was deceived over anti-Islam film

Garcia claims that she was tricked by a filmmaker who went by the name Sam Bacile. His real name is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, a 55-year-old Egypt-born Coptic Christian who lives in Los Angeles. He is on probation for convictions relating to federal financial crimes and was twice sentenced in the 1990s on drug charges, NBC News reported.

An ex-con named Nakoula Bessaly Nakoula was escorted from his Cerritos, Calif., home to answer questions about his role in a controversial anti-Islam film. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

The actress did not know there would be references to religion or any sexual content, the LA Times reported.

"It looks so unreal to me, it's like nothing that we even filmed was there," Garcia told Reuters in a phone interview. "There was all this weird stuff there."?

An expired casting notice at Backstage.com listed a film named "Desert Warrior" that it described as a low-budget "historical Arabian Desert adventure film." None of the characters were identified in the casting call as Mohammad.

"They told me it was based on what it was like 2,000 years ago at the time of the Lord," Garcia said. "Like the time Christ was here."

NBC's Isolde Raftery contributed reporting.

Fresh Hop Fests Galore: The Brew Site

Posted on by Jon

Ah, fall. It?s harvest beer season and around the Pacific Northwest that largely means fresh hop beers, a brewing trend that has grown to prominence here due to the close proximity of the hop farms (most breweries are within a few hours? drive). Not only do beers brewed with fresh hops (freshly picked off the vine, and not yet dried?or ?wet?) make their appearance this time of year, but a number of events and festivals celebrating this fresh hop bounty have also sprung up.

Of course many fresh hop events are taking place in Oregon, but there are others outside of the state as well. Here?s a bit of a guide to many of them, organized by date.

This Saturday, September 22?there are two:

Fresh Hops WorkshopPortland Beer Week and Saraveza have teamed up to present a Fresh Hops Worskhop starting at 6pm and taking place at Saraveza?s Bad Habit Room in Portland. Here?s the description:

This casual event features 4 of the first fresh hop beers of the season ? Total Crystalation from Ninkasi Brewing, Killer Green from Double Mountain Brewing, IPX ? The Freshmaker from Hopworks Urban Brewery and Wet Hop Simcoe Pale Ale from Breakside Brewery. Each of the breweries respective owners/brewers will be in attendance to talk about their beer and brewing with fresh hops.

Interactive aspects of the workshop include a Randall stuffed with fresh hops, hop infused olive oils with bread for dipping and tasting each?s properties, hop oils that can be used to dose a beer for flavor/aroma as well as a control batch of macro lager dosed and undosed and even the opportunity to hand French Press your beer with fresh hops. Later in the evening organizers will lead a discussion on brewing with fresh hops, growing and packaging hops and new regulations on Organic Hops. To discuss these subjects and more is a lineup of experts on the cutting edge of the industry.

Special guests include Ninkasi?s Jamie Floyd, Double Mountain?s Charlie Devereux, Breadside?s Ben Edmunds, Hopworks? Tom Bleigh, Gayle Goschie, and Indie Hops? Jim Solberg. Only 50 tickets are available at $10.50 each, and this close to the event I?d expect they might be close to selling out (though the PayPal ?add to cart? link still lets me add one to the cart so I don?t know the status for sure). That should be a great, interesting night.

SeptoberfestIf you find yourself a bit farther south in Oregon?s Willamette Valley on Saturday the 22nd, you might want to check out Seven Brides Brewing?s own Septoberfest Fresh Hop Beer Festival, taking place at Seven Brides? brewery in Silverton all day (from 11am until 11pm). The third year this event is taking place (they started in 2010), they plan to offer fresh hops beers from 15+ breweries, live music, food, and a wedding dress drive. In fact, they are donating to a great cause:

This year we are excited to announce that we have partnered with the national non-profit Brides Against Breast Cancer, and all proceeds will be going directly to them. Plus, we will be holding a wedding dress drive for Brides Against Breast Cancer which will kick off during Septoberfest and last the entire month of October. Be sure to check out the Facebook page for more info and specifics on the dress drive.

Cost for this year?s festival is $5 entry and $10 for a tasting glass and 4 tasting tickets. Additional tasting tickets are $1 each. Anyone that has a wedding dress to donate that meets the donation requirements will be given complimentary entry and a special gift from Seven Brides.

I haven?t seen a specific beer list out yet but if I get one I?ll post it.

The following weekend, on Saturday, September 29, there two more big events:

Hood River Hops FestThe Hood River Hops Fest is, I believe, Oregon?s largest fresh hop beer celebration taking place in downtown Hood River (between 5th and 7th Streets and Cascade and Columbia Streets) from noon to 9pm, and they will have a staggering 51 fresh hop beers (out of 64 beers totals) pouring! This is a big festival that not only includes the beer but also features wine, arts and crafts, great food, a kids zone, live music, and more.

Hood River County Chamber of Commerce hosts a beer lover?s dream when fresh-hopped brews from more than two dozen Northwest craft brewers are on tap. The event showcases Hood River County?s own microbreweries as well as some of the best of the Northwest brewers. To accompany the brews, Hops Fest showcases;

  • Local cuisine from woodfire pizza to American pub grub to vegetarian style dishes.
  • Unique arts and crafts vendors from around the Northwest including beer inspired soaps, unique jewelery and handmade pottery.
  • A selection of Gorge wines.
  • A Kids Zone with face painting and other child friendly activities.
  • And a day-long lineup of live music.
  • Held in a special street pavilion in the heart of downtown Hood River, admission includes commemorative stein, and tasting tokens are sold for a nominal price. The annual event attracts thousands and proceeds support the programs of the Hood River County Chamber of Commerce.

Children are welcome throughout the afternoon until 6pm; The venue is open to adults only until closing at 9pm.

  • $4.00 for wine drinkers and designated drivers
  • 21 and over $6.00, which includes beer tasting stein
  • 20 and under free until 5:30 p.m.
  • Tokens are $1 each. 4 tokens = a full beer, or 1 token = a taste.

The New School has the detailed list of the beers, the best name of which comes (of course) from Gigantic Brewing: ?The Most Interesting Beer in the World.?

Down in Central Oregon that same day, the Sisters Fresh Hop Festival is taking place in the heart of this small picturesque town in the Village Green Park from noon until 8pm. There will be 10+ breweries on hand pouring their fresh hop beers, along with food and entertainment throughout the day; the breweries will be pouring their beers under a main tent with additional seating and tables in the park general. I attended last year, and had a good time.

I don?t yet have a beer list or additional details but when I do I?ll post them.

On Friday, October 5, Deschutes Brewery is hosting one of their signature beer events at their Mountain Room in Bend, their Fresh Hop Harvest Beer Dinner. In past years this was a beer tasting event (free flowing beers and small plates), this year it?s a full dinner with four course and a precursor passed appetizer, with five fresh hop beers on tap to sample and pair with the food:

  • Fresh Hop London Strong Gold
  • Fresh Hop Scarlet Skies
  • Fresh Hop Fresh Squeezed IPA
  • Chasin? Freshies
  • Hop Trip

Deschutes is one of the most proliferate brewers of fresh hop beers around, with something like 12 to 14 planned this year between the Bend and Portland breweries. This Fresh Hop Dinner will be taking place from 6 to 10pm that Friday night, and the cost is $65 per person (and there look to be 30 spots open as I write this). This is a great event and if you get the chance to attend you absolutely should.

Saturday, October 6 is a popular day for fresh hops, with three events going on across the country:

Portland Fresh Hops FestSwinging into action in Portland?is the Portland Fresh Hops Fest taking place at the Oaks Amusement Park in the Sellwood area of Stumptown. The Fest takes place from noon to 8pm, and there is a special preview event the day before (Friday the 5th) from 5:30 to 8:30pm:

All orders placed at will call. Tickets, wristbands and glasses can be used at the Tastival on October 6th, 2012.
If you are a SNOB [Support Native Oregon Beer] and want to buy tickets ? you will be getting a separate email on how to buy your tickets at a discount.

Homebrew demonstration by Portland U-Brew & Pub

This is the big fresh hops event for Portland but I don?t know if it has the depth of beers available that the Hood River Fest has. Still, fresh hops! You can?t go wrong!

Fresh Hop Ale FestivalUp in Yakima, Washington, a major hop-growing region, they are celebrating their 10th Annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival from 5 to 10pm that Saturday the 6th. They have some 29 breweries on hand pouring fresh hop beers, wine and cider, a fresh hop homebrewing competition, food, music, and more.

At our ale festival, you?ll learn how hand-crafted ales are made in the demonstration tent, compare brews, sample wines, nosh great food, enjoy a cigar, and dance!

On top of all of that, you?re supporting the arts in the Yakima Valley. Proceeds from the Fresh Hop Ale Festival benefit Allied Arts of the Yakima Valley, providing nearly 20% of the annual budget in support of arts programs for all ages.

Tickets cost $30 in advance (only available locally) and $35 at the gate. You will also need to purchase ?scrip? (like tickets) for getting tasters and glasses of beer and wine.

This is one of those Big Ones that the?the Washington Beer Blog and Road Trips for Beer called ?one of the Ten Best Fall Beer Festivals in America? so it?s worth checking out!

Terrapin Hop Harvest 2012And then all the way over towards the East Coast, Terrapin Beer of Athens, Georgia is holding their own Hop Harvest Festival, an all-day event taking place at the brewery.

Good local food, educational guest speakers, toe tapping tunes all in Athens favorite back yard. This year there will be 16 casks each flavored with a different hop variety in two separate tents! And of course the harvesting of our very own hop garden.

We love Hop Harvest for all these things but the juiciest bud of all is the release of the 2012 So Fresh and So Green Green! This fresh hopped treat will be flowing all day long!

To attend Terrapin?s Hop Harvest, you need to pre-purchase your glass voucher to ensure you get in; these cost $22 which gets you your?souvenir glass and eight tickets worth four ounces of beer each, with?$5 from every one of these vouchers being donated to Georgia Organics.

On Sunday, October 7, Denver?s Falling Rock Taphouse presents their 6th Annual Fresh Hop Celebration from noon to 5pm (and sponsored by Deschutes Brewery). They have ten breweries listed that will be bringing some of the season?s best fresh hop beers.

The celebration will take place on the patio and in the parking lot of Falling Rock Tap House and will include live music, tastings, information on home brewing, people?s choice awards, activities and more.

  • All Ages Welcome, Must be 21 to Drink
  • Location: Falling Rock Tap House 1800 Blake Street, Denver, CO
  • Admission: $25, unlimited tasting, includes commemorative glass

$25 for unlimited tasting is a great deal, and proceeds from this event will benefit the Colorado Water Trust.

Willamette Valley Fresh Hop FestivalOn Saturday, October 20, the Willamette Valley Fresh Hop Festival is taking place in Eugene at the Lane Events Center at the Lane County Fairgrounds from noon until 9pm. Details on this are still scarce (it?s over a month out, after all) but it?s one of the Fests being organized by the Oregon Brewers Guild, like the Hood River, Sisters, and Portland events. Accordingly, prices announced are:

$15 for a glass and 5 drink tickets
$20 for a glass and 10 drink tickets

More on this as it develops.

Towards the end of the month, on Saturday, October 27, St. Louis? Schlafly Beer is holding their Fresh Hop Beer Festival from noon to 4pm at their Schlafly Bottleworks location.

In celebration of the fall hop harvest, we fly in fresh, wet hops from Washington State and then invite our friends from other local breweries to brew a unique style for our Fresh Hop Festival.

Participating breweries this year may include: 4 Hands Brewing Co., Charleville Microbrewery, The Civil Life Brewing Co., Crown Valley Brewing & Distilling Co., Exit 6 Brewery, Ferguson Brewing Co., Kirkwood Station Brewing Co., O?Fallon Brewery, Six Row Brewing Co., Square One Brewery & Distillery, Schlafly Beer, and Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.

Tickets will be available for $25 at both Schlafly Breweries and online beginning October 1st, 2012.

The cool part of this is, Schlafly flies the hops in and shares with the other breweries who then make fresh hop beers for this Fest. Stan wrote a bit about last year?s event. Is there better example of the camaraderie and sharing spirit of craft brewers? Perhaps, but I?ll bet it doesn?t taste as good as the beers at this Festival!

Video: ?Insider attacks? cause suspension of US-Afghan military operations

>> the israelis after the palestinian elections. i said really? he said, yes, i think there's some prospect. i didn't delve into it.

>> there you have the governor referring it to a private conversation he said he had with a former secretary of state saying there could be palestinian elections. he dent delve into that. he said palestinians not wanting to see peace in my way, and he would hope for some degree of stability. what kind of foreign policy is based on just hope there? this is the governor being candid in that room.

>> i think he was right to suggest that a path for the peace process is going to be difficult. i think he was wrong to say that the current status quo is sustainable. it's not. this is a festering wound within the middle east . it affects u.s. relations in the middle east and perceptions that have brought us the protests we've seen tragically the last few days. ultimately it's something that has to be resolved. this is largely up to the israeli prime minister and the palestinian president , and there is a fundamental lack of truth between the two. so it is going -- one would hope there will another opportunity going guard, but right now the conditions for a successful negotiate don't exist.

>> p.j., let me transition to afghanistan . you heard her report talking about the fact that nato preps feels undermined, this shoulder-to-shoulder program. obviously it's not working. we've seen too many lives taken as a result of afghan soldiers and police turns on their counterparts there. why is this happening, especially this timing?

>> let us be careful, tamron. there's no question that particularly the afghan military 's performance has improved significantly in recent years. the police is still a work in progress , although the nato command saluted the police over the last 24 hours for successfully breaking up demonstrations because of the film. nonetheless these green on blue attacks are undermining this partnership between the intern united states and afghanistan . they've been successfully taking measures to deal with these. ultimately, it's poor vetting of the individuals who have been brought into these institutions, and that is under review by the afghan government . it's going to take time to work through here to try to mitigate this threat.

>> you tell me to be careful here, but according to nbc news, a senior military official says, quote, we're to the point now where we can't trust these people.

>> i think this is taking a pause, because ultimately if this goes on it can fundamentally undernine the future relationship between the united states and afghanistan . so i think wiit's wise to take a strategic pause and try to strengthen the institution and understand the dynamic behind the attacks and see what steps can be taken to protect u.s. and isaf soldiers.

>> the question is how do you do that? there is a vetting process. they weren't pulling people in and giving them guns and uniforms. there was a process in place. how do you amend it all right. how do you amend the process?

>> well, i mean, part of this has been tension that existed for a long time between building up, you know, the level of afghan forces to a very ambitious size, 350,000 forces versus taking the time to patiently, you know, work with these people, train them effectively and give them time to develop professional skills. so on the one hand, you have a rise in capability, but on the other hand one of the factors always in developing an effective military and police force is time. it's not something that can be done over night.

>> is time on the side of this country. meaning the united states and men and women who are there. we know the president's plan. whether you say time t-these reports are coming out too grektly by a public sickened by the war and don't know the definition whaf success would be.

>> obviously on one hand there's a race to the end of 2014 when the mission as it's currently constituted will finalize. for the same token, the united states has said the ultimate job of helping build afghan government institutions will not be done by the end of 2014 . that's why it's important to condition to build this parngship between the united states and afghanistan . this is a broad challenge that will take years if not a decade or more.

>> thank you very much. great pleasure having you on. thank you.

>> thank you.

Obama jabs at Romney over his '47 percent' remarks

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? President Barack Obama declared Tuesday night the occupant of the Oval Office must "work for everyone, not just for some," jabbing back at Mitt Romney's jarring statement that as a candidate, he doesn't worry about the 47 percent of the country that pays no income taxes.

Romney neither disavowed nor apologized for his remarks, which included an observation that nearly half of the country believe they are victims and entitled to a range of government support. Instead, Romney cast his comment as evidence of a fundamental difference with Obama over the economy, adding the federal government should not "take from some to give to the others."

As the rivals sparred with seven weeks remaining in a close race for the White House, two GOP Senate candidates publicly disavowed Romney's remarks, caught on videotape at a fundraiser. Republican officials openly debated the impact that a series of controversies would have on the party's prospects of winning the presidency.

Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, said the Republican presidential nominee was "obviously inarticulate" in trying to make his point. The Wisconsin congressman told KRNV-TV in Reno, Nev., "The point we're trying to make here is, under the Obama economy, government dependency is up and economic stagnation is up."

Top Republicans in Congress declined through aides to offer their reaction to Romney's remarks ? just as they generally refrained from commenting a week ago when he issued a statement that inaccurately accused the Obama administration of giving comfort to demonstrators after they breached the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

The most recent controversy in a campaign filled with them was ignited by the emergence of a videotape, made last May, in which Romney told donors at a fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans pay no income taxes. They "believe the government has a responsibility to care for them ... believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement."

He said, "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

In a next-day interview on Fox, the network of choice for conservatives, Romney said he didn't intend to write off any part of a deeply divided electorate, including seniors who are among those who often pay no taxes. Instead, he repeatedly sought to reframe his remarks as a philosophical difference of opinion between himself and Obama.

"I'm not going to get" votes from Americans who believe government's job is to redistribute wealth," he said, adding that was something Obama believes in.

He also said he wants to be president so he can help hard-pressed Americans find work and earn enough so they become income taxpayers.

Romney didn't say so, but the U.S. income tax is designed to be progressive, so those who earn the most theoretically pay the most. Through programs as diverse as Social Security, Medicare, health care and food stamps, the government collects tax revenue and pays it out in the form of benefits for those who qualify.

Obama responded during an appearance on the David Letterman show.

"One thing I've learned as president is that you represent the entire country," he said. As for Romney's statement about the 47 percent, he said, "There are not a lot of people out there who think they are victims" or simply entitled.

At the same time, his campaign released a new ad saying that if Romney wins the White House, he might seek the elimination of a series of tax breaks used by millions of middle class Americans. "Mitt Romney, he's so focused on big business and tax cuts for the wealthy, it seems like his answers to middle class America are just tough luck," says a woman in the commercial.

For his part, Romney referred to videotaped comments Obama made in 1998 as evidence he favored government redistribution of wealth. As an Illinois state senator at the time, Obama said he believes in it "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."

Privately, some Republicans were harshly critical of Romney's most recent comments and his overall campaign to date, saying he had frittered away opportunities. They also noted that with early voting already under way in some states, the time to recover was smaller than might appear.

Linda McMahon, the Republican candidate for a Senate seat in Connecticut, was open with her criticism. "I disagree with Governor Romney's insinuation that 47% of Americans believe they are victims who must depend on the government for their care," she said in a statement posted to her website.

Sen. Scott Brown, in a tough race for re-election in heavily Democratic Massachusetts, said of Romney's comments: "That's not the way I view the world."

Still, with high-profile presidential debates and seven weeks of campaigning yet ahead, others said those concerns were overstated.

"I don't expect the negative headlines of this week will be what we're talking about a week from now," said Fergus Cullen, the former Republican state chairman in New Hampshire and a close ally of Romney. Like other Republicans, he said, "It's incumbent on the Romney campaign to make it (the election) about Obama's handling of the economy."

In recent days, Republicans have grumbled that Romney needed to sharpen his appeal to struggling middle class Americans by stating more clearly what he would do as president to help them. That effort began overnight with a new ad designed to appeal to female voters.

The new controversy blazed as opinion polls suggested that a narrow lead Obama gained nationally and in some key battleground states in the wake of the Democratic National Convention might be ebbing.

The sluggish economy and lingering high unemployment are by far the overriding issues of the election, and Romney's case for the presidency is based on his claim that his success as a businessman has left him the skills needed to create jobs in a nation where unemployment is 8.1 percent.

Obama and the Democrats have tried to counter by depicting the president's challenger as a multimillionaire who has some of his wealth invested in the Cayman Islands and elsewhere overseas, and is out of touch with the needs of middle class Americans.

In his original reaction to the video, posted by the left-leaning magazine Mother Jones, Romney told reporters Monday night that his fundraising remarks were "not elegantly stated." But he offered no apologies and did not answer directly when asked if he felt he had offended anyone.

He also called for the release of the entire video, rather than selected clips, and Mother Jones did so Tuesday afternoon.

By then, the magazine had already posted another excerpt in which Romney offered an unvarnished assessment of the chances for peace in the Middle East. "The Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace," and "the pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish," he said.

"You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem," he said, "and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it."

On another topic, he also noted that his father was born in Mexico and suggested humorously that "I'd have a better shot at winning this" if George Romney had been born to Mexican parents. "But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. ... And I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."

New research could provide new insights into tuberculosis and other diseases

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Researchers Patricia A. Champion and Matthew Champion from the University of Notre Dame's Eck Institute for Global Health have developed a method to directly detect bacterial protein secretion, which could provide new insights into a variety of diseases including tuberculosis.

The Champions point out that bacteria use a variety of secretion systems to transport proteins beyond their cell membranes in order to interact with their environment. For bacterial pathogens such as TB, these systems transport bacterial proteins that promote interaction with host cells, leading to virulent disease.

Previously, researchers have relied on methods that have fused enzymes or fluorescent markers to bacterial proteins to identify bacterial genes that are used to export bacterial proteins into host cells. However, these methods can't be used in the analysis of all bacterial secretion systems, which has limited understanding of the mechanisms that bacteria use to interact with host cells.

The Champions developed a modified form of bacterial proteomics using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer, which directly detects the proteins from whole colonies by ionizing them with a laser. This research revealed that the method was able to specifically monitor a specialized form of protein secretion, which is a major virulence determinant in both mycobacterial pathogens, such as TB, and Gram-positive pathogens, such as Bacillus and Staphylococcus species.

The Champions demonstrated that this new method is applicable to the study of other bacterial protein export systems that could not be effectively studied under previous methods. Their method could also help in the identification of compounds that can inhibit bacterial protein secretion.

The method's importance can be seen in the fact that there are approximately 2 million fatal TB cases each year, mostly in the developing world. Also, antibiotic-resistant strains of TB are appearing increasingly.

The Champions' research findings appeared in the journal Molecular and Cellular Proteomics. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and Notre Dame's Center for Rare and Neglected Diseases as well as capitalization funds from Notre Dame.

Canon Cinema EOS C100 hands-on (video)

Canon Cinema EOS C100 handson

Late last month, Canon added yet another model to its Cinema EOS line -- the C100 captures 1080p video, rather than the 4K clips enabled with the C500, but it also costs a heck of a lot less, at just shy of eight grand. It also offers some other nifty features, such as a pair of built-in mics and a duo of XLR inputs at the front of the top handle, SD card slots on the rear and a new autofocus button -- it's not a continuous solution, offering only single-shot, but it sure beats not having the feature at all.

The camera is surprisingly lightweight, given its size and capability, and can be held quite comfortably with a single hand, as we did during our hands-on at Photokina earlier today. With a modular design, the camera featured a 3.5-inch 920k-dot LCD in its current configuration, and offers the standard suite of ports, including HDMI output with embedded time code. It also includes an ISO range of 3200 to 20,000, a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000 second and a built-in ND filter. The C100 is expected to hit stores in November for $7,999, but you can take a closer look right now in our gallery below and the hands-on video just past the break.

How Acid Reflux Can Worsen Your Asthma | itworkss

Asthma is a chronic lung situation that is characterized by difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and mucus accumulation. People with asthma have added sensitive or hyper-responsive airways. For the duration of an asthma attack, the airways become irritated and react by narrowing and constructing, causing improved resistance to airflow, and obstructing the flow of the air passages to and from the lungs.

Some research indicates that the signs and symptoms of asthma may possibly get worse when you have heartburn or acid reflux. Acid reflux occurs when your undigested stomach content moves back up into your esophagus.

Acid reflux can cause painful heartburn which you can relieve with antacid medicines or organic remedies. Antacids merely neutralize your stomach?s acid, which reduces the burning sensation in your esophagus tube. It is very best to use natural treatments 1st since neutralising stomach acid is a temporary strategy and only serves to suppress the lead to of acid reflux.

For acid reflux, it is best to use digestive enzymes. Take an excellent digestive enzyme with each and every meal you consume. The next step would be to understand how to eat so you do not get acid reflux or heartburn.

Acid reflux happens mainly in men and women who are older and overweight. But often it can take place in children and in all kinds of individuals.

In some studies, researchers have injected acid into the esophageus of individuals with asthma, and it had a significant impact on their asthma and increased their asthma signs and symptoms.

These is also evidence to recommend that men and women who have asthma get acid reflux much more frequently than individuals without asthma. This is possibly because of the massive pressure adjustments in the chest during breathing in individuals with asthma. These high pressures could force liquid to travel the incorrect way up the esophagus.

In these cases, asthma sufferers seem to shed out twice: they suffer from asthma and they may possibly suffer from acid reflux more frequently than non asthma sufferers.

However, this is not the complete story. If acid reflux truly was an critical lead to of asthma worsening, then remedies against acid reflux should make the asthma much better, however, this is generally not the situation.

In the meantime, if you have asthma and you also have acid reflux, it could just be that careful therapy of your reflux will make your breathing much better.

If your asthma is negative and no-a single knows why, some doctors would verify no matter whether you have or had acid reflux by conducting tests to measure the acidity in your stomach. If the outcome showed a tendency for acid reflux, then your medical doctor really should help you eradicate this situation.

Making use of a medical professional who uses natural approaches to treat acid reflux is the finest way to go. Utilizing drugs to remove acid reflux when you are currently taking drugs for asthma is asking for addition health troubles in the future. Drugs do not remedy acid reflux and result in Theis situation to worsen. It is very best to use organic remedies and diet plan to get rid of acid reflux and heartburn.

Computer And Technology: Computer Technology - Online Learning ...

Computers are used in virtually every business and home across the United States. Business professionals and individuals may know how to use a computer to accomplish all of their needs but many people are lost when it comes to fixing a computer error or creating an information system. This is why online learning in computer technology is beneficial.

The possibilities open to students inside the realm of computer technology can have an individual doing everything from installing computers to creating programs for computers. The route of education is solely up to the student.

Approaching this field can be overwhelming but knowing the options prior to enrolling in a program is a helpful first step. Students who have no desire to create computer programs or build systems can earn a different education in computer technology. Students who like working with computers can learn how to repair, maintain, and control computer viruses through different certificate and degree programs. On the other hand students that want to learn how to create computer programs and work with businesses to establish information can find certificate and degree programs to enter. Students interested in computer technology should consider what tasks and responsibilities they want to accomplish in the professional industry. This is helpful because it allows students to pick the right degree path from the beginning of their education. Not having this luxury may result in having to switch to another program because the program selected may not be the correct path to enter their desired field.

The learning prospects can have students earning a degree from an associate to a doctorate depending on the field of study. Other fast paced programs may only require students to work through a certificate program in order to be licensed to carry out work duties. To become a computer technician students can work through an approximate 20 credit hour certificate program. This program would be a great choice to learn about all the areas of computer software and hardware. A program like this teaches students how to perform support and maintenance on computers. Students that receive this certificate can work with business and personal computers.

A more in depth computer technology degree can be gained through computer information science. Educational study at the bachelor level trains students to create applications to serve a businesses computer needs. Learning in this area would prepare students to provide continued assistance in running a businesses information systems and databases. Aspects of education at this level and degree have students studying how to prevent system failures, how to create easy to use systems, and how to work with technology communications.

Once a student knows what area of the industry they want to enter, choosing a degree won't seem like such a daunting task. Students need to consider how many years they can dedicate to learning. Choosing a program that is feasible depends on what an individuals career goals are and how much time they can give to education. Think about these two areas before picking a program in computer technology and the options will significantly lower producing an overall better decision.

Europe at loggerheads over banking reform

European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services Barnier Michel, center, Vice President of the European Central Bank V?tor Constancio, left, and Cypriot Financial minister Vassos Shiarly attend a news conference during the ECOFIN meeting in Nicosia, Cyprus, Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. Europe's finance ministers have failed to agree the terms for a new banking supervisory framework ? one of the key parts of plans to strengthen the region's financial system and help bring an end to the three-year debt crisis. (AP Photo/Petros Karadjias)

(AP) ? Europe faces weeks of tough negotiations to agree on a new region-wide banking supervisor after divisions emerged over the new body's powers at a meeting of the region's finance ministers Saturday.

The design of the new supervisory framework is widely considered to be a key part of Europe's attempts to strengthen its financial system and help bring an end to the three-year debt crisis.

On the second day of meetings in the Cyprus capital, finance ministers from all 27 members of the European Union pored over proposals unveiled earlier this week by the European Commission, the EU's executive branch. The Commission wants the European Central Bank to be given the role of supervisor and be granted sweeping new powers ? from the ability to grant and take away banking licenses to extensive authority to investigate and fine wayward banks.

Many Europe-watchers and politicians have called for a "banking union" ? a unified playbook for all the region's banks ? to help forge a tighter EU and solve the debt crisis hitting the 17 countries that use the euro, .

The creation of a single bank supervisor is an important part of this plan and has to be in place before other measures can be considered. These include a European-wide system of depositors' insurance; a single method for winding down bankrupt banks; and allowing the European bailout fund to directly help banks in trouble, instead of lending money only to governments.

All 27 EU countries have to agree on the new framework though it will only apply to the 17-nation eurozone at first. The remaining 10 countries in the EU can join if they wish, but they won't have voting rights at the ECB because they are not members of the euro.

Though Europe has agreed in principle to the need for a new supervisor, there have been disagreements over the detail, raising doubts over the Commission's aim to have to the ECB ready to take up its new duties by the new year.

"It will not be possible," said Wolfgang Schaeuble, Germany's finance minister. Germany only wants the largest banks to be under ECB control but the Commission proposals say all 6,000 banks in the eurozone should be monitored.

Michel Barnier, the European internal market commissioner and the man behind the proposals, conceded that the timetable was "tight and ambitious" but that it was "realistic" and "necessary." Cyprus finance minister Vassos Shiarly, who was chairing the discussions, said the Cypriot EU presidency's commitment to meet the end of year deadline remains "and we will adhere to it."

However, Swedish finance minister Anders Borg said he was concerned that the eurozone countries could overrule Sweden and other non-euro countries, such as Britain, on broader issues such as imposing new capital requirements on every bank in the EU.

"We can obviously not accept to have supervision in Europe be based on the ECB where we are not members and if we did become members we would not have voting rights," Borg said. "It is unacceptable to be under supervision from an organization where we don't have a voting right."

Borg said he had some "very clear red lines" before he would agree to a compromise deal and that a large chunk of the other ten non-euro countries shared his concerns: "Our taxpayers' money must be safeguarded. We must have the ability to uphold capital requirements. There cannot be a European supervision when half of Europe doesn't have a voting right in it. That's not acceptable. It cannot stand. It will not be tolerated. That has to be changed."

Barnier said that over the coming few weeks, his team would work on how to deal with the voting concerns raised by Borg.

Similarly, ECB vice-president Vitor Constancio said he understood Borg's worry over voting rights and that this point "will be discussed in the near future."

The first day of the informal meetings on the east Mediterranean island was dominated by discussions over the financial future of Greece and Spain.
