ISTANBUL (AP) ? Serena Williams extended her dominance over the top-ranked player in the world on Thursday, defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 at the WTA Championships.
Williams improved to 11-1 overall against Azarenka, winning the last nine matches. Williams beat Azarenka in the semifinals of Wimbledon and at the London Olympics.
"Maybe I'm doing the right things at the right time," said Williams, who also beat Azarenka to win the U.S. Open title before taking six weeks off.
Despite the loss, Azarenka can secure the No. 1 position with another victory in the round-robin tournament, which features the top eight players.
Williams, who is projected to finish the year at No. 3, won her third match at the event when Azarenka served a double-fault. Azarenka also lost the first set on a double-fault and finished with nine.
"I had a lot of opportunities and I didn't use them. I couldn't keep up," Azarenka said. "It's one of these days, I am a little said because I broke her a lot and I had a lot of chances."
The Belarusian squandered a 3-0 lead in the second set as Williams won the next four games.
"I just was able to play better than I did in my first couple of rounds," Williams said. "That was what I was going to have to do going up against the No. 1 player in the world."
Li Na beat Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in another Red Group to retain a slim chance of advancing. Sara Errani defeated Samantha Stosur 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 in the White Group.
Stosur replaced defending champion Petra Kvitova, who withdrew because of illness.
Li's first win in two round-robin matches means the Chinese player can still reach the semifinals, depending on other results in her group.
The fifth-ranked Kerber, making her first appearance in the season finale, bowed out after losing all three of her matches. She played more than three hours on Wednesday night in a three-set loss to Azarenka.
The top two players from each group advance to the semifinals.
Williams and Maria Sharapova, who was idle Thursday, have already qualified for the semifinals.
Sharapova, the French Open champion, could still take the No. 1 ranking away from Azarenka.
Williams has dominated the second part of the season, winning Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and Olympic gold in London. She's won 46 of her last 48 matches, but because of injuries and missed tournaments, cannot attain the top ranking.
Associated PressUnited Nations Day (Wednesday, 10.24.12) ? Inspired : A blog from ...
The idea of a global society isn?t as new as you might think. While the use of the internet has connected people more than ever, the United Nations has been unifying the world since 1945.? Today we celebrate United Nations Day, which is the anniversary of the UN Charter.
The term ?United Nations? was originally coined by U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt?in reference to?our allies in ?World War II.? In an effort to prevent future violence, that prevailing?concept of unity for good over evil was one of the main reasons for the official establishment of the UN.
The UN also actively promotes and defends human rights, education, economic development, health and other areas essential to a peaceful society.?? And at Halloween, you maysee trick-or-treaters asking for donations for UNICEF, the branch of the UN dedicated to children?s issues.
With such a great mission, the day honoring the United Nations is something worth celebrating!? Why not host a dinner featuring some international foods??or invite your friends to bring a dish from their ethnic background.? By encouraging global understanding on UN Day and every day, each one of us can promote the?important goal of a peace-filled world.

Judge Napolitano: Did Government Have a Legal Obligation to Tell ...
10:58 am ET October 24, 2012
It may seem like an obvious question ? but the answer may surprise you. This morning, Judge Andrew Napolitano discussed new documents revealed to Fox News showing that the White House knew the September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was pre-planned terrorism, even though the administration maintained it wasn?t for a stretch of time after the attack.
Fox Business Network?s Stuart Varney raised the question of whether or not the president or government officials hold any legal obligation to tell the truth. Napolitano?s answer? No.
The government has no obligation legally to tell the truth or reveal it, he told Varney. A moral obligation, however, yes.
?It?s unfortunate for the president, but fortunate for the voters,? Napolitano continued, citing the fact that now, voters get the chance to respond in way of votes as to how they feel about the current administration?s handling of the Libya attack.

Ancestry.com Selling For $1.6 Billion, Will Receive Premium Buyout ...
Ancestry.com is being sold to European firm Permira for a whopping $1.6 billion. Not bad for a site that bases its entire existence on tracking a person?s family tree.
According to reports Ancestry.com agreed to the 9.7% premium sales price on Monday. Ancestry.com first explored a sale in June, since that time shares have skyrocked by 41% at the genealogy website.
Since going public in 2009 shares at Ancestry.com have more than doubled, attracting attention from various private equity firms.
Ancestry.com is a huge hoarder of data with more than 2 million paying subscribers, 10 billion records and almost 40 million family trees.
Ancestry also owns websites ?MyFamily.com, ProGenealogists, and Rootsweb.com, genealogy software Family Tree Maker and Footnote.com. The latter platform holds billions of image that contain various historical records.
Ancestry.com is a global company that operates websites throughout parts of Europe and in Australia, China and Canada.
There are various family ancestry sites but Ancestory.com has become a mainstream entity, going so far as to partner with NBC for the reality TV show Who Do You Think You Are??which helped celebrities trace their family genealogies.
Ancestry.com is also no stranger to controversy, the site came under fire last year when the social security numbers of recently deceased people were leaked through the company?s Social Security Master File.
How Permira will leverage Ancestry.com to earn back its $1.6 billion buy price is not yet known. With the ability to reach a large unique visitor base it?s likely that much of Ancestry.com will continue with business as usual.

HAVANA (AP) ? Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro said he doesn't even suffer from a headache in an article he published in state-media Monday criticizing those who spread rumors he was on his death bed.
The article is accompanied by photos taken by son Alex Castro that show the 86-year-old revolutionary icon standing outside near some trees wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat, including one in which he is seen reading Friday's copy of the Communist Party newspaper Granma.
"I don't even remember what a headache feels like," Castro claims, adding that he was releasing the photos to show "how dishonest" the rumor mongers have been.
The article was published on the state-run Cubadebate Web site early Monday. It is the latest evidence the former Cuban president is alive and seemingly well after more than a week of intense speculation he was seriously ill.
Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise.
On Sunday, a visiting former Venezuelan vice president released a photo of a meeting he said he had the previous day with Castro, and a hotel manager also present for part of the meeting claimed Castro's health was "magnificent."
In the article Monday, Castro says he has been dealing with disinformation about Cuba since the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961.
He criticized Western media he said are in the pocket of the rich, and singled out Spain's ABC newspaper for publishing comments by a Venezuelan doctor who claimed to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke and had weeks to live.
Castro has been out of the public eye since March, when he received visiting Pope Benedict XVI. He also stopped writing his once constant opinion pieces, called "Reflections," the last of which was published in June.
Former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said he met with Castro for five hours and showed The Associated Press photos of the encounter, quashing persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was on his deathbed or had suffered a massive stroke.
Jaua also confirmed that Castro personally accompanied him to the Hotel Nacional after their encounter Saturday, in which they talked about politics, history, culture and tourism.
"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said Sunday, adding that Castro looked "very well."
In the article Monday, Castro explains that he chose to stop the opinion pieces of his own accord, not because he was too sick to continue them.
"I stopped publishing Reflections because it was really not my role to take up pages in our press which are needed for other work the country requires," he wrote.
Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.
