Apple CEO's pay takes big hit vs. record 2011 package

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook's 2012 compensation package of $4.17 million (2.58 million pounds) is a huge cut on paper for the top executive of the most valuable U.S. corporation, after a 2011 package fattened by more than $376 million (233 million pounds) in long-term stock awards.

Cook received the largest single pay package awarded to a company CEO in about a decade when he replaced Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) co-founder Steve Jobs in August last year, shortly before the Silicon Valley legend's death in October 2011.

The maker of the iPhone and iPad made the 2012 compensation disclosures in a regulatory filing on Thursday. Cook, 52, has been with Apple since 1998.

Virtually all of Cook's $376 million stock bonus in 2011 was in awards that vest in two chunks - one in 2016 and the other in 2021. This structure was intended to keep Jobs' longtime lieutenant at the helm for many years, as the value of the stock will depend on how well the company is doing in 2016 and 2021.

Cook, who is credited with masterminding a sprawling but efficient Asian supply chain, has generally received high marks for his first year for shepherding several successful gadget launches, including the iPhone 5.

But he was forced to make a public apology in September after the company launched a mapping service application riddled with glaring geographical errors. The Maps app fiasco contributed to the departure of fellow Apple veteran and software chief Scott Forstall.

In addition, some analysts questioned whether Cook, whose only major new product since taking the helm was a smaller version of the iPad that Jobs propelled into the mainstream in 2010, has the vision to produce the next big product category and sustain historically stellar growth for Apple as global mobile competition intensifies.

"The jury is still out in terms of the job he is doing," said fund manager Tim Ghriskey, whose Solaris Group counts Apple stock as the biggest holding among the approximately $2 billion it manages.

But he added that the company's long-term prospects look strong, particularly if it rolls out oft-rumoured television products in the next few years.

As of Thursday's close, Apple shares were almost 37 percent higher than when Cook became CEO 16 months ago. However, since a record-high close of $702.10 on September 19, the stock has fallen almost 27 percent.

Ghriskey said Wall Street remained nervous about the growing popularity of Google Inc (NasdaqGS: GOOG - news) 's Android phone software, used by global smartphone leader Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and potential margin pressure from that intensifying competition.

In terms of base salary, Cook actually received a 50 percent increase to $1.4 million for 2012, and the same 200 percent non-equity bonus other top Apple executives like CFO Peter Oppenheimer earned, Apple said in the Thursday filing ahead of a February 27 shareholders' meeting.

Cook's 2012 package includes a nonequity bonus of $2.8 million.

Despite the increase, Apple said Cook's target annual cash compensation is "significantly below the median annual cash compensation level for CEOs at peer companies." It also said that Cook will not receive any stock awards for 2012.

Cook's latest compensation package also pales in comparison to his package in 2010, when he was chief operating officer. That package was 14 times higher.

A company spokesman would not comment beyond the filing.

Jobs famously received $1 a year in salary in the three years before he stepped down, though in 2000 he too received a stock option that analysts say was valued at almost $600 million at the time.

Looking beyond Apple, Yahoo Inc (NasdaqGS: YHOO - news) 's CEO, Marissa Mayer, a former Google Inc high-flyer hired this year to try to turn around the struggling Internet icon, won a pay package worth more than $70 million. Despite her lack of a track record as CEO and Yahoo's tiny size in comparison, her basic pay is comparable to Cook's, with about $1 million in annual salary and up to $2 million in an annual bonus.

Oracle Corp's Larry Ellison, one of the most highly paid U.S. chief executives - and also the world's sixth-richest man, according to Forbes - received total compensation for the year ended May 31, 2012, of $96.2 million - almost all of it in stock options. That compared with $77.6 million in 2011.

According to a study of the Fortune 500 conducted by Forbes this year, CEOs were paid a base salary of $1.1 million in 2011 on average, with the mean annual bonus at $2.4 million and average total compensation - including stock awards - at around $17 million.

Apple shares closed up 0.4 percent at $515.06 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

Online Business Training ? 4 Reasons Why Your Self Image Holds ...

(Does that look like an office worker and fired security guard to you?)

I speak to online business entrepreneur who struggle to make a cent online. Others are keen to jump a few tax brackets. 1 obstacle holds you back: a poor self image. I hear from former teachers, house wives, office workers, explaining to me that they simply do not have the skills to make money online.

Folks you get what you give, meaning the self image you build perpetuates, creating a similar reality for you. A former teacher does not make money online. A wealthy online entrepreneur does make money online. Get it?

What benefits do you receive by improving your self image? You will be happier and wealthier, moving into the life you truly want to live.

Online Business Training

Reason 1 ? You Do Not Act on Good Advice

A former security guard ignores good internet marketing advice. I know. It was me for a long time. I struggled like hell because I viewed myself as a fired security guard instead of a successful, wealthy online entrepreneur, and fired security guards do not know good internet marketing advice when they see it.

Reason 2 ? You Hang Out With Bottom Feeders

This one will kill you. You might be struggling terribly in the financial department. You carry a self image of a poor, lowly person. So you hang with negative, poor and lowly people, and all of you complain about the problems of the world, and of course you do nothing to grow your online business. If you see yourself as a bottom feeder you hang with bottom feeders and you remain sick and broke. Your fault. Your chosen self image.

Reason 3 ? You Are Anchored By Your Problems Not Led By Your Dreams

Wow. Poor self image types are anchored by their problems. Listen to a conversation and you hear excuse after excuse obstacle after obstacle. No talk of dreams, or desire, everything is preceded by problems, problems, problems. Naturally you focus on problems you receive more problems instead of money generating business ideas.

Reason 4 ? You Do Stupid Stuff

You see yourself as broke you do things broke people do. You post hyped-up ads all in caps with exclamation points to 100 Facebook Groups. You lie to people. You use T and A to snag leads. You do stuff that stupid, broke people do and naturally you remain broke, because you do not see yourself as a successful, prospering online entrepreneur.

The Solution?

Find a quiet spot. Relax your body and mind. Allow a vision of yourself succeeding online to come to mind. Become emotionally involved with the image without getting attached to it. Get excited! Feel happy, see an inbox chock full of opt ins and watch yourself helping people to make money online.

Feel great! The feelings help your self image take root.

Online Fax Messaging Is The Future of Business Communication ...

In this day and age where information is instantly accessible and communication is made simpler through technology, your business needs to adapt accordingly by upgrading your landline to a business phone system. With features like fax messaging through the web, call waiting, call forwarding and so much more, business phones are definitely the way to go. If you already have a fax machine, you may think that it?s impractical to upgrade when the old machine still works. In fact, most bills are still paid via the use of a fax machine. The thing is, you may be limiting yourself to opportunities for increased revenue and strengthening your network between you and your clients, customers and even your employees. With the technology that Internet fax messaging offers, you may discover new ways to improve and uplift your business!

Picture this: You need to send an important document to someone with very little time on your hands, and in the middle of sending the message, your fax machine encounters a problem such as paper jamming or running out of ink. With fax messaging via the web, these problems are virtually eliminated. Internet fax messaging is a way to transmit fax messages without the need for a traditional fax machine. Many businesses with phone systems are now making use of Internet fax messaging because of the multitude of benefits it offers. Here are some reasons why you should consider upgrading to a phone system with Internet fax capabilities:

It?s cost-effective. Having a phone system with features such as online fax messaging dramatically reduces the costs incurred by traditional faxing. Exorbitant phone bills from lengthy long-distance and international calls are eliminated, as well as maintenance and costs for general upkeep of your equipment because Internet faxing is free. The only thing you need to pay is your monthly subscription to your Internet service provider of choice. It is also better on the environment, because you do not have to use paper or ink to send a fax.

It?s efficient. You will find that with a business phone system with fax capabilities, your business will be afforded freedom of mobility to access important files even while on the go. In fact, Internet faxing can even send and receive files from a traditional fax machine. You simply have to turn on your computer, laptop, smartphone or other mobile device to access the Internet and you can send and receive the files you need in a reasonable amount of time with little to no room for error.

Depending on the needs of your company, you can easily find online fax providers (RingCentral offers this kind of online service) that can let you send faxes for free! Consider subscribing to a phone system with online faxing capabilities to make life easier for you and your business.

A Hackathon Ushers In A Holiday Version Of Changemakrs, The Platform For Inspirational Quotes

Screen Shot 2012-12-23 at 5.49.52 PMChangemakrs, a platform for sharing inspiration built by an ex-Facebooker, is tapping into the Christmas spirit with a version of the site that lets anyone share holiday quotes. If you sign into the site, Changemakrs will automatically add holiday quotes to the homepage, using some natural-language processing algorithms that categorize the quotes. They also do quality filtering through internal user rankings. This holiday version of the site was hacked together in a few hours. The site has picked up holiday quotes from Bon Jovi, the movies “Miracle on 34th Street,” and “Elf,” and Charles Dickens. Changemakrs is a platform where anyone can post and share inspirational quotes. It was born out of some experimentation by a former Facebook business development manager Sacha Tueni and his co-founder Mathias Wagner. After working on a Twitter client (yes, a Twitter client) for a couple of months, they built a tribute site to Steve Jobs that overlaid his best advice on top of stark, black-and-white photos of him. The barebones site quickly went viral, accumulating 3 million pageviews in about 48 hours. They then repeated that approach with many other famous figures like Albert Einstein and Lady Gaga, with similar results. They then turned it into an open site where anyone could share or accumulate bits and pieces of aspirational wisdom. The site came out of beta earlier this month. Yes, it is a bit of a brain-dead, simple concept, and strangely, web-focused in a mobile-first world. But the team says that while there are plenty of quote sites across the web, these competitors are outdated with Craigslist-era design. Plus, they?re not designed to be particularly social or viral. Tueni, who used to work at Facebook, has been involved in social change-oriented projects before. Before he joined Facebook, he built a mobile service that let Lebanese voters report election irregularities with their feature phones. Changemakrs is currently bootstrapped for now.

Don't be fooled by January pay -- higher taxes loom

21 hrs.

Workers probably won't feel the full brunt of next year's tax increases in their January paychecks, but don't be fooled by the temporary reprieve.?

No matter what Congress does to address the year-end fiscal cliff, it's already too late for employers to accurately withhold income taxes from January paychecks, unless all the current tax rates remain unchanged, which is an unlikely scenario.?

Social Security payroll taxes are set to increase on Jan. 1, so workers should immediately feel the squeeze of a 2 percent cut in their take-home pay. But as talks drag on over how to address other year-end tax increases, the Internal Revenue Service has delayed releasing income tax withholding tables for 2013.?

As a result, employers are planning to withhold income taxes at the 2012 rates, at least for the first one or two paychecks of the year, said Michael O'Toole of the American Payroll Association.?

If employers don't withhold enough taxes in January, they will have to withhold even more taxes later in the year to make up the difference. Otherwise, taxpayers could get hit with big tax bills, and possibly penalties, when they file their 2013 returns.?

The tax increases could be steep. If Congress fails to act, workers at every income level face significant tax increases next year as part of the year-end "fiscal cliff."?

A taxpayer making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get an average tax increase of $2,400, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $92 a paycheck, on average.?

Someone making between $75,000 and $100,000 would get a tax increase averaging nearly $3,700. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $142 a paycheck.?

O'Toole said it would take most employers two weeks to four weeks to update their payroll systems, once new tax withholding tables are released. For some small businesses, it could take longer.?

"Employers can't really just come up with withholding tables on their own, depending on what the rates are," O'Toole said. "The smaller companies that do not use a payroll processing service probably would have more problems than anyone else."?

On Friday, the IRS said it plans to issue guidance by the end the year, though it won't be early enough to affect paychecks in early January.?

"We are aware that employers have questions with respect to 2013 withholding," the agency said in a written statement. "Since Congress is still considering changes to the tax law, we continue to closely monitor the situation. We intend to issue guidance by the end of the year on appropriate withholding for 2013."?

About three-quarters of taxpayers got tax refunds this year, averaging $2,707, according to the IRS. That gives most taxpayers some leeway to manage their income tax withholding. However, many people rely on tax refunds to pay bills or make major purchases.?

"The reality is, the vast majority of Americans do live paycheck to paycheck and that tax refund is their most significant payday of the year," said Bob Meighan, vice president of TurboTax, an online tax preparation service.?

Most of the expiring tax breaks were first enacted under President George W. Bush and extended under President Barack Obama. Obama campaigned for re-election on extending the tax cuts on incomes below $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples. Obama would let the tax cuts expire on incomes above those amounts.?

Boehner's offer
In negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, Obama offered to raise the income threshold, limiting tax increases to those making more than $400,000. Boehner, who has argued for years that the tax cuts should be made permanent for everyone, responded by trying to push a bill through the House that would have let many of the tax cuts expire on incomes above $1 million.?

Many Republicans revolted and Boehner, R-Ohio, shelved the bill, sending lawmakers home for the Christmas holiday and leaving the outcome of talks in doubt as the new year approaches.?

If Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal, income tax rates would go up, estate taxes and investment taxes would increase and the alternative minimum tax would hit millions of middle-income people. A temporary payroll tax cut that has benefited nearly every wage earner in 2011 and 2012 expires, costing the average family an additional $1,000 a year by itself.?

In addition, dozens of other tax breaks for businesses and individuals that are routinely renewed each year already expired at the end of 2011. Congress was expected to renew many of them by January, so taxpayers could still claim them on their 2012 tax returns.?

If Congress doesn't act on those tax cuts, businesses would lose a popular tax credit for research and development as well as generous tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment. Individuals would lose federal tax breaks for paying local sales taxes, buying energy efficient appliances and using mass transit.?

In all, taxes would go up by about $536 billion next year.?
