Apple CEO's pay takes big hit vs. record 2011 package

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook's 2012 compensation package of $4.17 million (2.58 million pounds) is a huge cut on paper for the top executive of the most valuable U.S. corporation, after a 2011 package fattened by more than $376 million (233 million pounds) in long-term stock awards.

Cook received the largest single pay package awarded to a company CEO in about a decade when he replaced Apple (NasdaqGS: AAPL - news) co-founder Steve Jobs in August last year, shortly before the Silicon Valley legend's death in October 2011.

The maker of the iPhone and iPad made the 2012 compensation disclosures in a regulatory filing on Thursday. Cook, 52, has been with Apple since 1998.

Virtually all of Cook's $376 million stock bonus in 2011 was in awards that vest in two chunks - one in 2016 and the other in 2021. This structure was intended to keep Jobs' longtime lieutenant at the helm for many years, as the value of the stock will depend on how well the company is doing in 2016 and 2021.

Cook, who is credited with masterminding a sprawling but efficient Asian supply chain, has generally received high marks for his first year for shepherding several successful gadget launches, including the iPhone 5.

But he was forced to make a public apology in September after the company launched a mapping service application riddled with glaring geographical errors. The Maps app fiasco contributed to the departure of fellow Apple veteran and software chief Scott Forstall.

In addition, some analysts questioned whether Cook, whose only major new product since taking the helm was a smaller version of the iPad that Jobs propelled into the mainstream in 2010, has the vision to produce the next big product category and sustain historically stellar growth for Apple as global mobile competition intensifies.

"The jury is still out in terms of the job he is doing," said fund manager Tim Ghriskey, whose Solaris Group counts Apple stock as the biggest holding among the approximately $2 billion it manages.

But he added that the company's long-term prospects look strong, particularly if it rolls out oft-rumoured television products in the next few years.

As of Thursday's close, Apple shares were almost 37 percent higher than when Cook became CEO 16 months ago. However, since a record-high close of $702.10 on September 19, the stock has fallen almost 27 percent.

Ghriskey said Wall Street remained nervous about the growing popularity of Google Inc (NasdaqGS: GOOG - news) 's Android phone software, used by global smartphone leader Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and potential margin pressure from that intensifying competition.

In terms of base salary, Cook actually received a 50 percent increase to $1.4 million for 2012, and the same 200 percent non-equity bonus other top Apple executives like CFO Peter Oppenheimer earned, Apple said in the Thursday filing ahead of a February 27 shareholders' meeting.

Cook's 2012 package includes a nonequity bonus of $2.8 million.

Despite the increase, Apple said Cook's target annual cash compensation is "significantly below the median annual cash compensation level for CEOs at peer companies." It also said that Cook will not receive any stock awards for 2012.

Cook's latest compensation package also pales in comparison to his package in 2010, when he was chief operating officer. That package was 14 times higher.

A company spokesman would not comment beyond the filing.

Jobs famously received $1 a year in salary in the three years before he stepped down, though in 2000 he too received a stock option that analysts say was valued at almost $600 million at the time.

Looking beyond Apple, Yahoo Inc (NasdaqGS: YHOO - news) 's CEO, Marissa Mayer, a former Google Inc high-flyer hired this year to try to turn around the struggling Internet icon, won a pay package worth more than $70 million. Despite her lack of a track record as CEO and Yahoo's tiny size in comparison, her basic pay is comparable to Cook's, with about $1 million in annual salary and up to $2 million in an annual bonus.

Oracle Corp's Larry Ellison, one of the most highly paid U.S. chief executives - and also the world's sixth-richest man, according to Forbes - received total compensation for the year ended May 31, 2012, of $96.2 million - almost all of it in stock options. That compared with $77.6 million in 2011.

According to a study of the Fortune 500 conducted by Forbes this year, CEOs were paid a base salary of $1.1 million in 2011 on average, with the mean annual bonus at $2.4 million and average total compensation - including stock awards - at around $17 million.

Apple shares closed up 0.4 percent at $515.06 on the Nasdaq on Thursday.

Online Business Training ? 4 Reasons Why Your Self Image Holds ...

(Does that look like an office worker and fired security guard to you?)

I speak to online business entrepreneur who struggle to make a cent online. Others are keen to jump a few tax brackets. 1 obstacle holds you back: a poor self image. I hear from former teachers, house wives, office workers, explaining to me that they simply do not have the skills to make money online.

Folks you get what you give, meaning the self image you build perpetuates, creating a similar reality for you. A former teacher does not make money online. A wealthy online entrepreneur does make money online. Get it?

What benefits do you receive by improving your self image? You will be happier and wealthier, moving into the life you truly want to live.

Online Business Training

Reason 1 ? You Do Not Act on Good Advice

A former security guard ignores good internet marketing advice. I know. It was me for a long time. I struggled like hell because I viewed myself as a fired security guard instead of a successful, wealthy online entrepreneur, and fired security guards do not know good internet marketing advice when they see it.

Reason 2 ? You Hang Out With Bottom Feeders

This one will kill you. You might be struggling terribly in the financial department. You carry a self image of a poor, lowly person. So you hang with negative, poor and lowly people, and all of you complain about the problems of the world, and of course you do nothing to grow your online business. If you see yourself as a bottom feeder you hang with bottom feeders and you remain sick and broke. Your fault. Your chosen self image.

Reason 3 ? You Are Anchored By Your Problems Not Led By Your Dreams

Wow. Poor self image types are anchored by their problems. Listen to a conversation and you hear excuse after excuse obstacle after obstacle. No talk of dreams, or desire, everything is preceded by problems, problems, problems. Naturally you focus on problems you receive more problems instead of money generating business ideas.

Reason 4 ? You Do Stupid Stuff

You see yourself as broke you do things broke people do. You post hyped-up ads all in caps with exclamation points to 100 Facebook Groups. You lie to people. You use T and A to snag leads. You do stuff that stupid, broke people do and naturally you remain broke, because you do not see yourself as a successful, prospering online entrepreneur.

The Solution?

Find a quiet spot. Relax your body and mind. Allow a vision of yourself succeeding online to come to mind. Become emotionally involved with the image without getting attached to it. Get excited! Feel happy, see an inbox chock full of opt ins and watch yourself helping people to make money online.

Feel great! The feelings help your self image take root.

Online Fax Messaging Is The Future of Business Communication ...

In this day and age where information is instantly accessible and communication is made simpler through technology, your business needs to adapt accordingly by upgrading your landline to a business phone system. With features like fax messaging through the web, call waiting, call forwarding and so much more, business phones are definitely the way to go. If you already have a fax machine, you may think that it?s impractical to upgrade when the old machine still works. In fact, most bills are still paid via the use of a fax machine. The thing is, you may be limiting yourself to opportunities for increased revenue and strengthening your network between you and your clients, customers and even your employees. With the technology that Internet fax messaging offers, you may discover new ways to improve and uplift your business!

Picture this: You need to send an important document to someone with very little time on your hands, and in the middle of sending the message, your fax machine encounters a problem such as paper jamming or running out of ink. With fax messaging via the web, these problems are virtually eliminated. Internet fax messaging is a way to transmit fax messages without the need for a traditional fax machine. Many businesses with phone systems are now making use of Internet fax messaging because of the multitude of benefits it offers. Here are some reasons why you should consider upgrading to a phone system with Internet fax capabilities:

It?s cost-effective. Having a phone system with features such as online fax messaging dramatically reduces the costs incurred by traditional faxing. Exorbitant phone bills from lengthy long-distance and international calls are eliminated, as well as maintenance and costs for general upkeep of your equipment because Internet faxing is free. The only thing you need to pay is your monthly subscription to your Internet service provider of choice. It is also better on the environment, because you do not have to use paper or ink to send a fax.

It?s efficient. You will find that with a business phone system with fax capabilities, your business will be afforded freedom of mobility to access important files even while on the go. In fact, Internet faxing can even send and receive files from a traditional fax machine. You simply have to turn on your computer, laptop, smartphone or other mobile device to access the Internet and you can send and receive the files you need in a reasonable amount of time with little to no room for error.

Depending on the needs of your company, you can easily find online fax providers (RingCentral offers this kind of online service) that can let you send faxes for free! Consider subscribing to a phone system with online faxing capabilities to make life easier for you and your business.

A Hackathon Ushers In A Holiday Version Of Changemakrs, The Platform For Inspirational Quotes

Screen Shot 2012-12-23 at 5.49.52 PMChangemakrs, a platform for sharing inspiration built by an ex-Facebooker, is tapping into the Christmas spirit with a version of the site that lets anyone share holiday quotes. If you sign into the site, Changemakrs will automatically add holiday quotes to the homepage, using some natural-language processing algorithms that categorize the quotes. They also do quality filtering through internal user rankings. This holiday version of the site was hacked together in a few hours. The site has picked up holiday quotes from Bon Jovi, the movies “Miracle on 34th Street,” and “Elf,” and Charles Dickens. Changemakrs is a platform where anyone can post and share inspirational quotes. It was born out of some experimentation by a former Facebook business development manager Sacha Tueni and his co-founder Mathias Wagner. After working on a Twitter client (yes, a Twitter client) for a couple of months, they built a tribute site to Steve Jobs that overlaid his best advice on top of stark, black-and-white photos of him. The barebones site quickly went viral, accumulating 3 million pageviews in about 48 hours. They then repeated that approach with many other famous figures like Albert Einstein and Lady Gaga, with similar results. They then turned it into an open site where anyone could share or accumulate bits and pieces of aspirational wisdom. The site came out of beta earlier this month. Yes, it is a bit of a brain-dead, simple concept, and strangely, web-focused in a mobile-first world. But the team says that while there are plenty of quote sites across the web, these competitors are outdated with Craigslist-era design. Plus, they?re not designed to be particularly social or viral. Tueni, who used to work at Facebook, has been involved in social change-oriented projects before. Before he joined Facebook, he built a mobile service that let Lebanese voters report election irregularities with their feature phones. Changemakrs is currently bootstrapped for now.

Don't be fooled by January pay -- higher taxes loom

21 hrs.

Workers probably won't feel the full brunt of next year's tax increases in their January paychecks, but don't be fooled by the temporary reprieve.?

No matter what Congress does to address the year-end fiscal cliff, it's already too late for employers to accurately withhold income taxes from January paychecks, unless all the current tax rates remain unchanged, which is an unlikely scenario.?

Social Security payroll taxes are set to increase on Jan. 1, so workers should immediately feel the squeeze of a 2 percent cut in their take-home pay. But as talks drag on over how to address other year-end tax increases, the Internal Revenue Service has delayed releasing income tax withholding tables for 2013.?

As a result, employers are planning to withhold income taxes at the 2012 rates, at least for the first one or two paychecks of the year, said Michael O'Toole of the American Payroll Association.?

If employers don't withhold enough taxes in January, they will have to withhold even more taxes later in the year to make up the difference. Otherwise, taxpayers could get hit with big tax bills, and possibly penalties, when they file their 2013 returns.?

The tax increases could be steep. If Congress fails to act, workers at every income level face significant tax increases next year as part of the year-end "fiscal cliff."?

A taxpayer making between $50,000 and $75,000 would get an average tax increase of $2,400, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research group. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $92 a paycheck, on average.?

Someone making between $75,000 and $100,000 would get a tax increase averaging nearly $3,700. If the worker is paid every two weeks, that's about $142 a paycheck.?

O'Toole said it would take most employers two weeks to four weeks to update their payroll systems, once new tax withholding tables are released. For some small businesses, it could take longer.?

"Employers can't really just come up with withholding tables on their own, depending on what the rates are," O'Toole said. "The smaller companies that do not use a payroll processing service probably would have more problems than anyone else."?

On Friday, the IRS said it plans to issue guidance by the end the year, though it won't be early enough to affect paychecks in early January.?

"We are aware that employers have questions with respect to 2013 withholding," the agency said in a written statement. "Since Congress is still considering changes to the tax law, we continue to closely monitor the situation. We intend to issue guidance by the end of the year on appropriate withholding for 2013."?

About three-quarters of taxpayers got tax refunds this year, averaging $2,707, according to the IRS. That gives most taxpayers some leeway to manage their income tax withholding. However, many people rely on tax refunds to pay bills or make major purchases.?

"The reality is, the vast majority of Americans do live paycheck to paycheck and that tax refund is their most significant payday of the year," said Bob Meighan, vice president of TurboTax, an online tax preparation service.?

Most of the expiring tax breaks were first enacted under President George W. Bush and extended under President Barack Obama. Obama campaigned for re-election on extending the tax cuts on incomes below $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for married couples. Obama would let the tax cuts expire on incomes above those amounts.?

Boehner's offer
In negotiations with House Speaker John Boehner, Obama offered to raise the income threshold, limiting tax increases to those making more than $400,000. Boehner, who has argued for years that the tax cuts should be made permanent for everyone, responded by trying to push a bill through the House that would have let many of the tax cuts expire on incomes above $1 million.?

Many Republicans revolted and Boehner, R-Ohio, shelved the bill, sending lawmakers home for the Christmas holiday and leaving the outcome of talks in doubt as the new year approaches.?

If Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal, income tax rates would go up, estate taxes and investment taxes would increase and the alternative minimum tax would hit millions of middle-income people. A temporary payroll tax cut that has benefited nearly every wage earner in 2011 and 2012 expires, costing the average family an additional $1,000 a year by itself.?

In addition, dozens of other tax breaks for businesses and individuals that are routinely renewed each year already expired at the end of 2011. Congress was expected to renew many of them by January, so taxpayers could still claim them on their 2012 tax returns.?

If Congress doesn't act on those tax cuts, businesses would lose a popular tax credit for research and development as well as generous tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment. Individuals would lose federal tax breaks for paying local sales taxes, buying energy efficient appliances and using mass transit.?

In all, taxes would go up by about $536 billion next year.?

Lakad Pilipinas: PASAY CITY | Staycation at Microtel Mall of Asia

The Greece-Inspired Roof Deck of Microtel MOAI have been traveling almost non-stop the past few months and although I really love what I?m doing, being a travel junkie and all, it does get to you after a while. Constantly being on the road can be tiring.

And so when Microtel extended an invite for a mini vacation within the Metro, I didn?t even blink, I immediately grabbed the opportunity.

Microtel MOA FacadeI would be staycationing with a group of travelers; L of Anny?s Chocolate Skies, D of Tracking Treasures, C of Adventurous Feet, E of The Shade of Grey and J of The Backpack Chronicles. Relaxing with like-minded individuals would surely double the fun.

We entered the posh lobby of Microtel at five in the afternoon. Puffy white clouds sailing across Manila Bay were already being lit by the already setting sun. We immediately headed towards the roof deck of the hotel.

Sunset on the Roof Deck of Microtel MOAI was floored the moment we opened the door to the roof, it was as if I entered a warp zone into Santorini. Everything was painted in white; the floor, the trellises, the columns. The whites were offset by posh dark brown outdoor furniture which contrasts nicely with the theme. Potted palm trees and the panoramic view of the bay completed the illusion of Greece.

Microtel's Infinity Pool Looking Over Manila BayAt the center of the roof deck sits an infinity pool that looks out over the glimmering sea and the glittering lights of the city.

A couple lazily swam across the azure pool as the waning sun painted the heavens in contrasting shades of blues and oranges. I was almost tempted to jump in if not for our rooftop dinner (which I?ll tell you about on another post as it deserves its own article).

Mall of Asia's Fireworks Seen from the Roofdeck of MicrotelAfter watching the weekend fireworks lit the night sky, countless stories, non-stop picture taking of the food and being treated to one of the best dinner I?ve ever had. It was time to bed down for the night.

Microtel's Modern and Spacious RoomsWe were given rooms facing the city and the MOA Eye is clearly framed on the window. The room is spacious; two queen-sized beds, a vanity table and a closet leave more than enough space to run around in. And although the bed looks tempting, my favorite spot is the bay window.

Microtel's Clean and Modern Toilet and BathMost guests, especially the ladies, are particular when it comes to the toilet and bath and Microtel?s own wouldn?t disappoint. The fittings are modern, hot water is available and most importantly it is very very clean. The one thing I particularly like about it is their rain-type shower.

Early Evening at Microtel's Roof DeckI was planning on shooting the sunrise the next day but I guess Microtel?s comfort got the best of me. I overslept and got zero sunrise photos from the roof deck. Well, I guess I really got what I came here for, it is a staycation after all.MOA's The Eye from Microtel's Roof Deck

Changing Your Resume for Each Company - job search techniques ...

IP is over the quota
IP is over the quota

A recruiter once gave me an excellent tip when she said to change my resume every time I applied for a job. Why I asked? She told me that company recruiters will often use a keyword search to select the candidates that they feel matches the position. This keeps them from having to sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive. She said that if the resume does not have the keywords that they look for, then they typically go into the rejected pile.

Depending on the position you're applying for, you should use words that will notify HR managers about your qualifications. For example, if you're looking for a position as the Vice President of an accounting company you might want to include words such as:

- Tax Accounting

- Reconciliations

- Profit and Loss Statements

It can be very difficult to find a job in today's economic climate, and looking for high level or executive work requires a keen eye, and often, knowing someone whose already in the organization. After updating your resume, send it to your friends in the industry and see if they are able to direct it to the appropriate HR managers.

If you're looking for a job as an administrative assistant you should use the following words when updating your resume:

- Ability to type 80 wpm

- Microsoft Office

- Mac office

- Reception

- Phone support

No matter the type of work you're looking for make sure you ask past colleagues or friends if they know of any open positions within their companies. It's always an excellent decision to put your feelers out and see what kind of work is available. And always change-up your resume to meet the requirements of the job. It may be a entry-level position, but as long as you can turn it into something down the road, it may be worth looking into.

Tips for Working with Keyword Search Software

Many companies will use a type of software that identifies keywords in resumes. But what can you do to beat these machines?

Revise your resume so it includes keywords included in the job description during your opening. Take for example, if the job description says, "Coordinate and develop websites and blogs," your resume must include keywords such as "websites" and "blogs". But only if you have the experience, of course...

Update your multipurpose resume with frequently used keywords so that you do not have to revise it every time you have another job interview. One idea is to revise it every six months in order to stay current. Newer keywords may be used in the future, so stay current with them.

Add the most important keywords to your cover letter. Don't over do it though. You just want to have a few of the choice words that HR managers are looking for.

Wii U Mandatory Firmware Bricks Consoles That Don't Finish ...

The massive 5GB firmware update that Nintendo decided to deploy on the consoles launch day - Sunday - is proving to be a disaster for Nintendo and for customers who might decided the hour or more wait for it to be applied is just too long. According to several games journalists and this GII story, shutting down the system while the update is being downloaded or stopping (resetting or powering the system down) it bricks the Wii U. In other words, it makes the console no longer work...

"Warning: don't unplug your Wii U during the 2 hour plus software update or the console stops working," said Ben Fritz of the LA Times via Twitter.

Geoff Keighley of GTTV also tweeted about the update: "The Wii U firmware update is apparently about 5 gigs," wrote Keighley. "No wonder it takes about an hour+ to download."

If you have just bought a Wii U make sure you heed the warnings of the community, because apparently there are plenty about the Wii U surfacing this morning....

Update: the 5 GB size of the firmware is being called into question by a number of other sources, and may simply have been a miscommunication by Geoff Keighley. We'll update this story as we have more information.

Introducing Pet Insurance for Exotic Pets ? hot news

The demand for exotic pets has increased over the decade in comparison to the common pets market. More and more people prefer an exotic pet, mostly as a statement of their personality, traits or lifestyle. As a result, insurance companies have developed specific policies customized to the needs of exotic pet owners.Exotic pets are generally more difficult to care for, so the cost of the veterinary bills may not be something you can cover without having an insurance policy. If you have decided on the type of exotic pet you want in your household, being covered for the illnesses or accidents that might happen to it is a must. The typical policy of most insurance companies available on the market will have a maximum amount of money paid for every illness your pet might suffer from, based on the premium you are willing to pay.You can choose to insure your companion for a limited amount of time in order to pay less on the premium, but this is a huge risk. If your insurance expires and the treatment of your exotic animal is not over, you will have to cover the rest of the cost yourself. At the same time, the older your exotic pet gets, it will be harder to obtain a good deal on your insurance, because the companies will see insuring it as a liability. The best option is to purchase lifetime insurance. If the pet you have just bought has to travel from a large distance, there is always a chance that it might be lost during the transportation. If you spent a great deal of money on your exotic animal, you do not want to pay the costs of replacing it again. When you are taking your exotic companion to a trip in another country, you should be aware that all such pets have to spend some time in the quarantine, in order to be sure that they are not carrying any type of dangerous and rare disease. Most exotic pets insurance will cover the costs of the time your pet has to be placed in quarantine, saving you a lot of hassle.Purchasing an exotic species means you have to be prepared to deal with more problems than a common pet. You have to take more precautions in order to keep it happy and healthy, therefore having exotic pet insurance is a must.

Fedcap & NYSID Open NYC Battle Buddy Center

NEW YORK, Nov. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fedcap (http://www.fedcap.org/) and NYSID (http://www.nysid.org/) today gave Post-9/11 veterans a gathering place of their own in central Manhattan.

Returning veterans face considerable challenges as they transition into civilian life and work, particularly in today's difficult economic climate. More than 200,000 Post-9/11 veterans are unemployed, at a rate inexplicably higher than the national average.

"Right outside that door are a host of services and key people who can help you," Christine McMahon, Fedcap President and CEO, told the veterans gathered for the center's opening ceremony. "Fedcap is committed to helping all who served our country achieve the best possible reintegration into civilian life and employment."

"NYSID is pleased to partner with Fedcap in opening this Battle Buddy Center, our third such initiative in New York State," said Ronald P. Romano, NYSID President and CEO. "Our partnership of opportunity in job creation enriches lives, serves customers and strengthens communities."

"I expect great things to happen in this Battle Buddy Center," said Capt. Kyle Carney, an Iraq veteran, Company Commander of the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Totten in Queens, and Treasurer of the Battle Buddy Center's Advisory Council.

The Battle Buddy Center, on the 6th floor at Fedcap, 119 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011, will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Participants should bring a photo ID and proof of veteran status.

What does closing cost (Foreclosure) include? - Zillow Real Estate ...

it depends if you are the buyer or the seller and it depends on your loan as well.? If you are planning to make an offer on a property with an agent the agent is bound by law to provide you with estimated closing costs.

There are escrow fees, title search fees, document processing fees, recording feeds, prepaid taxes and insurance (if there is a loan), origination fees etc.

perhaps if you are more specific, that you're looking at a home, vacant land, commercial building etc, it's in town or unplatted, there is a loan or not, and about how much the sales price of the home is you might get some better answers.

best person to ask would be whoever it is that is helping you find a the property.

[iPad Mini] Can an iPad Mini + generous data plan replace an iPhone?

I find that I use my iPad more and more recently. Lets just hypothetically speaking that an iPad mini has a retina screen (inevitable). Would you be able to replace a phone with an iPad mini with say, unlimited data (which I have), or even a 5gb plan?

What would you use in conjunction with iMessage? I have never explored google voice but I'm assuming that's an option. What about calling? I don't talk on the phone much but that's definitely an option.

I can see with the right device the tablet will someday merge with the phone, what do you guys think it will take for this to happen?

Unique protein bond enables learning and memory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Two proteins have a unique bond that enables brain receptors essential to learning and memory to not only get and stay where they're needed, but to be hauled off when they aren't, researchers say.

NMDA receptors increase the activity and communication of brain cells and are strategically placed, much like a welcome center, at the receiving end of the communication highway connecting two cells. They also are targets in brain-degenerating conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

In a true cradle-to-grave relationship, researchers have found the scaffolding protein, SAP102, which helps stabilize the receptor on the cell surface, binds with a subunit of the NMDA receptor called GluN2B at two sites, said Dr. Bo-Shiun Chen, neuroscientist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

While one binding site is the norm, these proteins have one that's stronger than the other. When it's time for the normal receptor turnover, the stronger bond releases and the lesser one shuttles the receptor inside the cell for degradation or recycling.

"One binding site is involved in stabilizing the receptor on the cell surface and the other is important in removing the receptor. We think it's a paradigm shift; we've never thought about the same scaffolding protein having two roles," said Chen, corresponding author of the study in the journal Cell Reports.

"We believe by understanding the normal turnover of these receptors, we can learn more about how to prevent the abnormal receptor loss that occurs in debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer's." In Parkinson's, the receptors inexplicably move away from where the synapse, or information highway, connects to the neuron, making them less effective. NMDA receptors are supposed to cluster where the synapse hooks into the receiving neuron; in fact, it's part of what anchors the synapse, Chen said.

Interestingly, this pivotal protein, SAP102, a member of the MAGUK family of scaffolding proteins, is the only family member known to directly contribute to maladies: its mutation causes intellectual disability.

While all cells have a system for managing the number of receptors on their surface, in Alzheimer's, this removal process appears accelerated, with increased engulfing of receptors and less neuron-to-neuron communication. The neurotransmitter glutamate helps establish and maintain the synapse and also binds with GluN2B.

GluN2B-containing NMDA receptors stay open to receive information for a long time, enabling the type of vigorous and sustained communication that enables learning and memory. In fact the number of these receptors naturally decreases with age, which may be one reason young people learn easier. When it's time to remove a receptor, phosphorus gets added to GluN2B, changing its function so it no longer binds to the scaffolding protein.

Chen's research was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and conducted in mice and rat neurons in culture. Collaborators include Dr. Roger A. Nicoll, Professor, Departments of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, the University of California, San Francisco, and Dr. Katherine W. Roche, Senior Investigator, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Samsung Galaxy Reverb (Virgin Mobile)

The $249.99 Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a solid midrange Android smartphone?for Virgin Mobile. It isn't terribly exciting, but it's a good deal better than many other phones in the carrier's lineup. It gets you Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), along with good battery life and call quality, as well as a comfortable design with a good-looking display. But it lacks 4G WiMAX support, the single-core 1.4GHz processor is only average, and it costs $50 more than the comparable HTC One V?. Not only that, but if you spend an extra $50, you can get the dual-core, 4G HTC EVO V. The Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a good smartphone?it's just a little overpriced.

Design and Call Quality
With a pretty basic look, the Galaxy Reverb is made entirely of black plastic, with a lightly textured back panel. It feels flimsy compared with the metal HTC One V, but at least at 4.80 by 2.52 by 0.44 inches (HWD) and 4.55 ounces, it's comfortable to hold and relatively light. The most distinctive feature is the phone's angular chin, ? la Samsung Droid Charge, which juts out a little at the bottom. It's not my cup of tea. Still, it's less extreme than the curved mega-chin on the One V.

The 4-inch, 800-by-480-pixel Super AMOLED display looks bright and crisp, though its PenTile pixel layout makes text and images appear fuzzy if you look closely. The 3.7-inch display on the HTC One V has the same resolution, but it isn't PenTile and the screen is smaller, so it looks sharper. The 4.3-inch screen on the HTC EVO V is also sharper and can display glasses-free 3D images and video. Still, the display on the Galaxy Reverb should make most people happy. There are three capacitive function keys right below it, and typing feels fine on the phone's onscreen keyboard.

The Galaxy Reverb is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz) handset with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi that works on the standard 2.4GHz band. Call quality was good in my tests. Voices sounded clear in the earpiece, with just a touch of echo. Calls made with the phone were also clear and easy to understand, with average noise cancellation. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset and voice dialing worked over Bluetooth. The speakerphone also sounded fine and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Battery life was good at 8 hours and 42 minutes of talk time.

Data Speeds and Plans
As we discovered in our testing for the?Fastest Mobile Networks, Sprint has the slowest 3G speeds of all the carriers we tested. That means that all 3G-only Sprint, Virgin, and Boost phones, including the Galaxy Reverb, are running at some very slow data speeds. If you live in the coverage area,?4G WiMAX support offers a major boost to the EVO V (Virgin's only 4G phone at the moment), so make sure to take that into account when making your decision.

The best reason to get a phone on Virgin is to tap into the carrier's inexpensive pricing plans. You can get "unlimited" texts and data for just $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. The 1,200 minute plan costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you don't do much talking, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month. There is a downside for heavy data users: After 2.5GB of full-speed data usage per month, your speeds will be throttled significantly until the end of your billing cycle.

For an additional $15 per month, you can use the Galaxy Reverb as a mobile hotspot. This also gets you an additional 1GB of full-speed data added to your plan.

Processor and OS
The Galaxy Reverb is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 MSM8655 processor. It turned in solid benchmarks scores for its single-core category, but with the rise of quad-core processors, chipsets like this are really starting to look long in the tooth, especially for high-end gaming. Still, behind the EVO V, this is Virgin's most powerful phone and you should be able to run most of the 600,000+ apps and games available in the Google Play store without a problem.

Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is the version of the OS on board here. For a contract-free phone, that isn't bad. It brings with it a host of improvements that many of Virgin's other phones, stuck on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), won't see. There's no word about an update to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), and it isn?t something you should count on.

You get five customizable home screens that come preloaded with various apps and widgets. Virgin has added MobileID, which allows you to install different "ID packs" on your phone that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets. There's also some bloatware like a Samsung app store, as well as the overpriced Samsung Media Hub, neither of which can be deleted. Still, you get plenty of standard Android benefits, like a fast Web browser and free voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Galaxy Reverb comes with 1.95GB of free internal storage, along with an empty microSD card slot on the left side of the phone. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine, and the phone is compatible with a large mix of multimedia file formats.

I was able to play all of our music test files, including AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA. Music sounded good through?Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones as well as wired earphones. The phone was also able to play back all video files, except for DivX, at resolutions up to 720p.

The 5-megapixel auto-focus camera is average. Shutter delay is a little long, at an average of 1.2 seconds. With adequate lighting, photos look good, with reasonable levels of color and detail, though they suffer considerably in lower lighting. Recorded 720p video plays back at a smooth 30 frames per second, though details aren't as sharp as I've seen from phones with comparable cameras. There's also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, which you don't get on the HTC One V.

The Samsung Galaxy Reverb is a good midrange Android phone. It just costs more than it should. You can get the HTC One V, which has a nicer display and a better rear camera, for $50 less, though it lacks a front-facing camera for video chat. Or, if you're looking for more power, $50 more gets you the Samsung EVO V 4G, which has a dual-core processor, 4G WiMAX support, and a glasses-free 3D display. Virgin also sells the Apple iPhone 4 and 4S?, which have gorgeous displays and incredible app catalogs, though they're very expensive, and are stuck on 3G speeds.?

iFixit opens up new Mac Mini, has no trouble putting it all back together again

Image

iFixit's been on something of an Apple tear lately -- just a day after ripping into the barely-repairable new 13-inch MacBook Pro (not to mention the new nano and touch), the site has gotten its hands on -- and into -- the new Mac Mini. Unlike like the shiny new notebook, however, the diminutive desktop was apparently a pleasure to open up and put back together again, scoring an eight out of 10 on the repairability front and altogether forgoing the site's use of adorable kittens. The Mini gets good marks for upgradable RAM and drives and a general lack of glue and proprietary screws. Click on through the source link below to see the Intel 2.5 GHz dual-core i5 in all its glory.
